Shumi never got the choice at Ferrari. Or really
at Mercedes.

General F1 Discussion / They want to mess with F1 Quali format again in 23.
« Last post by John S on April 30, 2022, 05:26:08 PM »
Q1 everyone must run hard tyres.
Q2 all runners on Mediums.
Q3 the gloves finally come off and we see Softs.

- What could possibly go wrong?

Well some teams may never strap softs on in earnest all weekend for a start. :swoon:
Also how are midfield/tailend teams supposed to embarass top teams into coming out again after a hard or Medium run without soft tyres to scare them with.  :DntKnw:

F1 Teams / Re: Brawn doesn't go easy on Wolff

Even if this story is right Jim Ratcliffe of INEOS has more than enough lolly to mop up Daimler-Benz third share in the MercedesAMG F1 team if neccesary. Current shareholders almost always get first refusal if one partner wants out and this may have been plan all along when INEOS stepped up to invest.

I'm pretty certain when Merc main board broke up the previous shareholding a year or 2 ago into a 3 way split - Daimler - Toto - INEOS; it was to have an easy exit from team ownership if needed.

I note there's no suggestion that AMG HP powertrains is to be divested, they're the engine suppliers and Merc/Daimler still own that outright. So Merc wouldn't leave completly, well not right away that is, but I guess it would call into qusetion the new gen engines for 26.

Hey maybe that's the real story here - Merc will move on rather than take Porsche/Audi head on. Makes sense with more than one current Merc engine customer being targetted with V.A.G. overtures.

Maybe they could contact the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Southeast Region for a replacement. They have regularly run Solo 2 Autocross events in that same car park for years. Their race director should have it down pat by now.  ;)

General F1 Discussion / Will Masi have last laugh on Toto & Lewis at Miami F1 race?
« Last post by John S on April 30, 2022, 04:33:50 PM »
Will the politically sidlined Race Director, Masi, be called on to stand in for Covid infected colleagues at Miami GP?   :D

Now wouldn't that cause some hilarity, table thumping and red faces.   :DD

F1 Drivers / Re: Perez's future to be decided by summer
« Last post by John S on April 30, 2022, 04:23:12 PM »
I see it as pretty routine stuff for Checo to be kept on for 23 season. It's another matter of fact comment from Marko just to keep his drivers, in F1 or feeder series, putting effort in as hard as poss.

Gasly will not return to main Red Bull seat IMHO, Marko dumped him because he lacks the ability to overtake others in similar of slightly inferior cars. Sure Pierre he has a real turn of speed but that's not enough for top 5 racers, they've got to have the complete package and best others in similar, maybe even better, machines.

Look how Pierre struggled at Imola, he was stuck behind others in similar machinery and went backwards if anything rather than forwards. Compare this to either Tsunoda or Albon's performance in Italy, both went forwards. Q.E.D. I'm afraid.

Like all you others I don't feel George is really outperforming Lewis if you study the stats carefully. However most top line winning atheletes have a cross over point from the abosolute best to lesser perfomances. Most seem able to manage a very gradual decline and hope to jump out before it gets too bad.

My fear is Lewis may have reached this crossover point and the more George fnishes ahead of him the more it will appear his days in F1 are numbered, certainly as far as the new breed of young fans and general news media view it.

If he loses more ground in the points table to George maybe it is time for Lewis to duck out during the season, citing impacts on his body from porpoising are medically too risky for the health of an ageing veteran 7 times WDC.  ;)
