Post by: John S on March 02, 2010, 08:43:20 PM

Whilst one of the first new teams, USF1, goes kaput the last of the new teams, Lotus, goes from strengh to strengh; with an American sponsor to boot.

The Lotus Racing team has signed a partnership deal with leading news network CNN, it was announced on Tuesday.

The team, which is bringing the Lotus name back to Formula 1 for the first time since 1993, said CNN's logos will on the T127 cars during the 2010 season.

"We are very proud to welcome CNN into the Lotus Racing family," said team principal Tony Fernandes.

"It is a sign of the positive impact we have already made in the global business market that such a prestigious brand, familiar to millions around the world as the definitive source of news and current affairs, has made the decision to partner with us.

"The whole team and I are looking forward to working with CNN in the months and years to come on some very exciting campaigns."

The deal will be managed by CNN's commercial 'Partner Solutions Group', led by Rani Raad, senior vice president CNN International Advertising Sales.

That seems a pretty big name for Lotus, well done to them!

I'm glad for Lotus but it makes me
wonder why CNN couldn't throw some
money USF1's way

Maybe CNN tried but found out things about USF1 we didn't know?

Even though Speed Channel wasn't formally affiliated with USF1, CNN is a direct competitor for Fox News, part of the same umbrella organisation that Windsor worked for.  So CNN and USF1 wouldn't be a natural fit.  (Not to say it couldn't work... just not something that would come together easily.)

It's probably a non-US arm of CNN that is supporting Lotus anyway (I know that a brand is a brand, but the advertising monies are still divided up by region, and I doubt that US dollars are going to Lotus.  For now.)

Thanks for pointing that out Jeri  :good:

Makes sense for them to not have been looking into USF1 then!
