There was a small error right off. It's true the Cooper was the first midengined car to win an official WMC race it was not the first successful midengined car in any series. The Auto Union C-type and D-type won a number of races in the '30s. They may not have won the European Championship up against Mercedes, but they were certainly competitive. And I believe the 6 wheel version of the C-type did win the European Hillclimb Championship.

Don't know if they still do it, but teams used to build Monaco only front suspension parts because the hairpin is so tight they needed more lock than at any other track.

It's certainly tough to put a dollar value on these things, as you're paying for manpower more so than materials.  The cars need to be broken down and rebuilt between races anyway.  Who knows how many Monaco parts were planned to be on the Canada version of the RBR?  How many reserve parts are there that need to be replenished?

I do think there might be a way to create non cap fund for repairing cars.  Like all teams, or FOM or FIA pays into it and that's how teams pay for repairs (for crashes that were officially 'not their fault').  Any left over funds at the end of the season go into FIA's charitable endeavors.  It allows teams to focus on development, and make sure they're paying their staff as much as they can, rather than holding on to a reserve that presumably goes back to whoever owns the team when not spent.

When they use a spare monocoque Lonny they have to build another spare in case of further shunts, so it hardly matters whether cost of spare is in budget or not because price of one monocoque will be added come what may. 

Presumably all teams run a contingency amount in budget for happenings like this, too many big shunts though will lead to loss of money for newly developed parts eventually in a season. Could make the difference between winning a championship in a really competitive year.

We haven't seen a down to the wire season yet in new cost cap era. Maybe it happens this year.  :DntKnw:

How much of that is money already spent for spares hanging on the wall or stored on a shelf or in a drawer back at HQ? Does he mean out of pocket or removed from inventory? Do they not have to count the spare monocoque if they don't use it?
