Title: Olympics!
Post by: Jericoke on February 13, 2010, 01:39:13 PM
Is anyone here a fan of the Winter Olympics?

I know the timing of games in Vancouver isn't going to be great for those of you in Europe, but if I can deal with F1 races at insane times, you can watch figure skating when you should be sleeping, lol.

My favourite event is Hockey.  I AM Canadian, after all!

I'm keen to see the Bobsleigh runs and the Skeleton, but I think most of the big fuss in the Uk will be about the Curling.

I can't say I'm a fan of curling, to much housework involved with all that brushing, :D and it's just bowls on ice after all. It looks good and easy to follow on television though so it will get shown a lot.

I keep an eye on the Hockey but I watch it mainly for the charging, bashing and punch ups. :good:

I've always been a hockey fan. I'm a snowboarder myself, so I watch that.

I have to admit that I became a curling fan during the last Olympics. It was on in the morning, about the time I'd be getting ready to head out of whatever motel I was in. I'll be watching it again this time.

I'm a bit ski fan, but I won't miss the hockey, especially if the Canadians make it to the final (although I think it will be against the USA)...

First gold medal of the games goes to.......SWITZERLAND!   :good: :good:

So what if it is to an anorexic ski jumper   :D
Title: Re: Olympics!
Post by: gato on February 14, 2010, 01:54:39 AM
His name is Simon Ammann. the smaller and lighter jumper, the furthrer he goes. ;) i dont remember one german jumper's name who was really anorextic. some pics at beach showed his really fit body and it was not beautiful view..his coach and family was worried because he lost so much weight.

Sven Hannawald was that anorectic ex ski jumper guy that i was talking about.

I was kinda joking Gato - all the ski jumpers are borderline anorexic...the strongest muscles in their bodies are in their ankles for landings.

I agree that those jumpers are slim. it must take hard power to push into fly from the platform.

I think most of the big fuss in the Uk will be about the Curling.

I had no idea anyone even cared about curling outside of Canada.  It's not really my sport, but all but a guaranteed medal for Canada.  (Our other medal lock is women's hockey.  In game 1 we beat Slovakia 18-0)

Britain won a gold medal in curling back in 2002 and that was enough to start a craze. After all, Britain rarely has much success in the Winter Olympics because the Summer Olympics has a disproportionate amount of attention from British sportspeople and sponsors.

Don't be too sure about women's hockey. In our first game, we beat China 12-1.  ;)

I wasn't guaranteeing a gold for Canada, but it will be at least silver.

Wow - two more golds for Switzerland (Downhill and Cross-Country 15k Mens).  Not bad for a puny little country - even one filled with mountains.

Great gold for Canada in Freestyle skiing...looks like the Quebec Air Force is at it again!

The women's game is slower, and the Canada games are very uninteresting unless playing USA, Finland or maybe Sweden.

I'll watch those ones, but not the other ones.  All the men's games will be competitive.  It's not uncommon for the teams without NHL players to beat teams made entirely of NHL players.

The Scandinavian men's hockey teams are fantastic.  Outside of Finland, the women aren't so impressive yet.

We try to get some medals in ski and ski jumping but the silver medal was great surprise because it came in sport that was not so expected. How big bet rate is for Canada's ice hockey gold?

What is different between luge and skeleton? :DntKnw: they both are fast sport where a man or woman is lying on the bobsled. in luge face is towards heaven, in skeleton towards ice. i can see those sports only in winter olympics.

I think the luge you go down the course feet first and
the skeleton is more what we think of as a sled here
in here in the USA, you go down the track head first

Skeleton is also closer to the ground (actually safer - lower centre of gravity).

If Canada doesn't win a gold medal in men's hockey, it will be a national disaster.  Without hyperbole, the Prime Minister literally believes that the next election hinges on whether or not we win a gold medal in hockey.

When Canada didn't win the gold medal in Japan, the GOVERNMENT actually put together a panel to change the rules in kids hockey so that Canadians would become bettter at it.

When Canada didn't win the gold medal in Italy, the country turned against Wayne Gretzky.  He was public enemy number one for putting together a team that lost.

in hte Us you go down the track head first

The skeleton is a sled that slides on top of the track.  The luge has blades, like a bobsled or ice skate, that dig into the ice.

Even though the skeleton looks crazier than luge, it is safer:  it won't get into a rut like a luge, you can see where you're going easier, and your centre of gravity is positioned better.

Post by: Scott on February 19, 2010, 04:08:12 PM
The skeleton has runners (not sharp though), but they are not as high, or sharp like the luge's (call them blades).  The control is by dragging your feet, while the luge is controlled by bending the blades with your feet.

Thanks for all about the explanation! :D The speed in luge/skeleton can be even 130 km/h. it almost same than ride a bike at race. :o

It wasn't a great game.  The USA and Canada only played average, though Ryan Miller, the American goal keeper, played extraordinarily well.  It was the highest rated sports even in Canadian TV history.

It's going to be harder for Canada, but we're looking at it like a crucible... the hotter things get, the purer the team will be.

The main problem is that while a national team getting ready for a soccer/football world cup, the Canadian Olympic team never plays together, never plays 'friendlies', doesn't even have to qualify.  They just get together and play in the olympics with one or two practices... it's hard for 20 guys who are normally the best guy on their team, the 'go to guy' to fit together.

Nobody wants easy games.... I'd love for every game to be 3-2, won in overtime (I'm not a fan of shootouts.  It's like deciding an F1 race by timing pit stops)

Canada vs USA is on tonight at 9:15pm Swiss time (Central European Time).  I've reserved the TV and space on my couch for the entire game.  Can't wait.

I've noticed something here that is different than in North America.  And I like it.  Here they rate the countries by the number of Gold that they have won, not by the total medals...therefore in the Swiss newspaper, Canada is in the lead, while in North America, it shows us in third.  Switzerland is in 5th, not 11th.  And not to forget, the USA is in 3rd, not 1st   :P :P

Tonight's game is going to put it all on the line.  I expect violence of Olympic proportions, lol.

Well, in Canada we normally rank it by total medals because we normally load up on bronze, so it makes us look better.  I'm sure that everyone wishes we'd do it by gold now!

What a nail-biter.  Great game - super that Crosby got the overtime goal.  Gotta give credit to the USA, they played a fantastic game, but what a fantastic way to finish the Olympics - Canada takes the last (and many in Canada would say - the most important) Gold medal.

Phew - time for bed!

A well earned Gold Medal for Canada in hockey!

And Canada officially wins the most gold medals ever at a Winter Olympics!!

How about that goal with 24.4 seconds left in the third to send the game to overtime? Quite a game!!! :yahoo:

The oddest part for me was cheering against Rick Nash. The rest of the year, he's the captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jackets are the closest thing we have to a local NHL team.

Brian Burke and Ron Wilson are the GM and Coach of the USA team AND the Toronto Maple Leafs (my team, in case you can't guess).  They're supposed to be hockey gods, and then become the hockey devil for two weeks?!  Along with Phil Kessel, the only decent Maple Leaf this year!

One of my friends commented that it must be a new sensation for Rick Nash to be on TV for once ;-)

Now you both Scott and Jeri are in 7th heaven after the Canada win...i became glad too because Canada battled very well through the game. USA was not easy piece of cake and the game was full of "almost goal" situations. I watched only the first set because it was late night here but i watched highlights today. now Canada has won also 14 medals in Olympics that is the new world record (Russia had 13 ones before).
