F1 is also far, far slower than IRL, usually with fewer cars on track. I agree with Mario, it was a freakish one-off. It's just so sad that it happened in the last race before the new, safer car comes on line.

The IRL's safety teams are much better than F1's. F1 pretty much leaves it up to the Medical Deligate in his Merc wagon. As was mentioned, it took forever for help to get to Ralf Schumacher. In the IRL, the Safety Team is usually on site by the time the cars involved stop moving.

By the way, F1 didn't even require seat belts until 1970.

Maybe simplistic, but I think it was a kind of freak accident. Motor racing is dangerous and things do go wrong unfortunately.  I'm unwilling to place blame, but do want to pose one question.  How safe can a racing car be that is in its seventh season of racing?  One of the pit falls I think of one make racing.
