Honda Staying until 2025

(1/1)

Jericoke:
Looks like winning a championship has changed Honda's mind about withdrawing from F1.  Rather than supplying Red Bull's power unit programme, Honda will be providing power units directly to Red Bull and Alpha Tauri, as they have been recently.

This will last until 2025, as the new engine formula starts in 2026.

Marko notes this is significant as Red Bull Power will be considered a 'new' entry in 2026.  I'm not sure what that means from a 'legal' or 'budget' point of view, but it does mean that all the talent they've been hiring can focus 100% on the 2026 engines without worrying about the engines before then.

It makes for a good excuse if the new engine turns out to be a boat anchor.  ;)

John S:
I reckon this is more about keeping Honda IP away from VW/Audi/Porsche. Plenty of rumours that RBR is target for a new OEM from 2026 season.

By keeping all the build in Japan for these last few years of the old regs Honda can keep all their secrets from their succesor.
They also get to keep the marketing potential of one world championship, and maybe more until end of 25.
