Title: F1 2010 - Are you ready for it?
Post by: Canada Darrell™ on September 20, 2010, 08:31:59 AM
Dusted off and formatted a recently retired 300GB HD and installed Windows 7 x86 and video drivers. Made it nice and lean and mean with most services turned off. Got the force feedback wheel working nice again and am honing my chops with "Race On" and "GTR Evolution".

NOW ALL I NEED IS F1 2010!! They keep sayin' Sept. 22 so a few more days to go!  :yahoo:

I've gleaned together a bunch of screen shots from actual in-game footage on the Xbox 360 but the PC should be as good or better. If it comes even close to Grand Prix 4 for gameplay I'll be in heaven.

For me the only way to play any PC racing sim is in cockpit mode and the screenshot from inside the Force India car is enough to make your jaw drop. mmmmmmmmmm thats good motion blur!  :good:

Wow, after someone said they had a PC meltdown, I guess someone has picked up some new bits.  7.1 Surround?  I'll be happy with external speakers on mine.

Nah Scott, it was a HDD corruption... no other hardware was affected.  I've had the speakers for a couple years now.  Got the sound card to support the output last year.

Just a heads up for those playing on a console WITHOUT a wheel. You will probably not have a positive experience other than drooling at the pretty graphics as you bounce off the walls. If you do attempt to play with a standard paddle controller prepare to get your lunch handed to you by either online opponents or the cumputer AI.

Those of us lucky enough to be playing with a wheel, especially on a PC, are in for a real treat! :good:

Got my Ferrari Thrustmaster wheel (with paddle shifters) connected, F1 2010 loading (24 hours earlier than expected), prepared to have my ears and eyes reduced to a melted mess within 10 minutes of starting the game.... I'll let you all know what I think later on......  :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

The Momo wheel is a good wheel for the price, usually
under $100 US ad you can switch to a stick shifter though
it's only up and down to shift.A good set of gaming
headphones works too.

Went to a local gaming store Monday and asked
about when their getting it and the clerk said
it's not coming out in a pc version,oh well F1
in the US,maybe Best Buy will have it.

Ian a pc wheel doesn't take up much space,it
clamps down to the front of your desk

Well I now have a few hours gameplay under my belt and the verdict.  The sound in the replay mode leaves me un-impressed, however, the sound in cockpit mode at the start of the race is great.  The graphics are superb and you don't need a supercomputer to run at full graphical effect.

I have learned one thing in my tinkering.... I don't have what it takes to drive a car full speed around monaco. (that was just in grand prix mode not career)

In career mode I am driving for Toro Ross and have finished practice and qualy for my first race of the season, I'll start 8th on the grid tomorrow night for the race.

Perhaps I can get a grid game for my career mode... LOL

overall.... I'm very much liking it and believe the rest of you will too.

Dare, just what I was thinking. Make sure all driving assists are turned off or stated in your postings though.

Full driving assists on and I still REALLY suck at monaco....

the thing about some of these racing games I
never l;iked was getting the setups right. Not
having the car setup right makes them almost
undrivable for me,especially in GP Legends, ask
anyone who's ever played it

Car setup can be as specific as you like or a nice generalised quick setup from the engineers.

Title: Re: F1 2010 - Are you ready for it?
Post by: Canada Darrell™ on September 23, 2010, 06:15:47 PM
Here's my thoughts on the PC version after about 48 hours of owning the game. I am basing all of this in comparison to the legendary "Grand Prix 4" by Geoff Crammond. so it has a lot to live up to in my book.

I am playing on full simulation level, all driving aids turned off with the exception of the prefered driving line for the first 20-30 laps while learning new tracks.

Initial BAD impressions:

- No mouse support in the menu system. Definately a bad sign indicating PC support was secondary throughout development for consoles.

- Shifting...a definate lag time in response of maybe a 1/10th or 1/4 second. Just enough to be incredibly annoying. I find it hard to believe that this won't be fixed in the first patch..assuming one will be forthcoming.

Initial GOOD impressions:

- Graphics - one word..."Superb". I'll list my system specs at the end. Absolutely stunning performance. Heat haze from engines on the start grid, detailed background and foreground rendering, fluid motion with zero glitching or hiccups.

- Computer AI - very good. As you approach for a pass the AI will make a move to block and will protect the driving line down low into corners. In about 200 laps of racing so far I have yet to have an AI car p*ss me off with a stupid move.

- Sound - excellent but I'm only listening in stereo. I love the way other cars enter into the mix as they approach you from behind. Subtle but just enough to let you know how close they are getting.

- Car set ups - just enough settings to satisfy most sim racers. Certainly not the level of adjustments that GP4 had but then again, I'm not a race engineer. The auto adjust will be fine for most racers but if you want to tweak you shouldn't be disappointed. Changing to maximum downforce and lowering the car a bit really helped me out at Monaco.

- Control input - using my Logitech Wingman formula force there is thankfully zero lag time in any steering movements. Other than shifting lagging too much for my liking I am very happy.

- Replay - after a race you are treated to a full replay (at least on the 20% races I've been doing) and during a race you can back up and re-enter the race from an earlier point. Kinda like a mulligan in golf and you get to specify how many do-overs per session you want.

Ok, now for some other thoughts that didn't belong in the "bad" or "good" categaries. If you play a race less than 20% of actual distance you don't have to do a mandatory pit-stop for the 2nd tyre compound. However, when you are running at 20% distance you must pit for a 2nd set of tyres. DO NOT pit when your race engineer asks you to as you are almost gauranteed to enter the pits during green flag racing along with a bunch of other cars and the lollipop man will hold you up. I dropped in for tyres in my first race and was treated to a 14 second pit stop while I watched 5 cars that I was ahead of going in pass me in the pits! Lower tiered teams definately take longer to change tyres that top teams, which is a little disappointing. I am playing as Force India and I'm typically around 5-6 seconds per stop. The one race I did as Mark Webber my pit time was under 4 seconds. Go figure.

I was racing at Australia yesterday and it started to rain after my stop for tyres. As the rain got harder I kept waiting for the call to drop in for inters or wets but the call never came and I kept racing......just as hard. Approaching the finish line my visor was so wet that it was getting harder to see yet the car seemed just fine on the slicks. I don't know if this was a one-time glitch but am planning on doing some wet races today to investigate.

My system specs:

Windows 7 32-bit
Intel E8400 Dual Core @ 3ghz
4GB ram
Radeon 4870 1GB DDR 5 ram
Crappy old 300gb 5400 rpm pata drive!
Logitech Wingman Force Wheel
1680x1050 will all detail maxed out

Actually I could order it from UK cheaper than Australia Luke, thanks for offer though.

The online price to download is $39.95 US,which is a little more than
half price what it would cost over seas not counting shipping. If I
could download it and make a dvd copy I'd save money and have a

Wonder how much trouble that is?

Has anyone with the pc version had problems with starting the game?

Looking thru the  Codemaster forums there seems to be major bugs
with the release of this game.

Couldn't get the game to download[wasted $39.95!  Found a dvd
copy on ebay and bought it for $53.00 with shipping but in the meantime I downloaded the game with the way they didn't reccomend.Thought all was going great when I installed the game
on my pc to find out it won't download.

Now I find out thru the forums that this won't work on single core pc's.Not sure if that's my problem though. Why couldn't this have been
a GP5 instead.

There are loads of bugs in the game, some minor and some major (ie sometimes the AI cars don't pit, or when they do at the same time as you, your lollypop man will hold you back until the whole pit lane clears) but Codemasters have patched the game now so it is much better.

well it seems I have ansingle core pc and the brains at

I must admit I'm playing it on the PS3 as the noise of my PC is driving me mad.  The fans cooling the graphics card and processor sound like a jet engine taking off.  However I could probably run it full spec on my PC as I can any other Codemasters game.  It is a great game though, especially now it works.  Worth bankrupting yourself for?  I might wait for F12011 when they iron out some of the things from this game... give yourself some time to save up  :good:

Not now, but there were, including one where your saved game files were corrupted randomly meaning you had to start again, so my half season at Lotus which was beginning to see me gain interest from the midfield teams was lost and I had to begin again.  Didn't touch the game again until it was patched.

Gaming>>PS3>>How To Repair A PS3 Blu-ray DriveHow To Repair A PS3 Blu-ray Drive
By: Shawn Landis

Break Studios Contributing Writer

Do you need to know how to repair your PS3's Blu-ray DVD drive? Perhaps your drive has stopped reading the discs entirely. If it just stopped reading the Blue-ray DVDs, it may be a software issue that a repair shop can fix. They might charge you for this privilege. There are two possible issues that are not software related that might cause the Blu-ray drive to not function normally.

1.Buy a lens cleaner. This will fix most problems with the DVD drive, although not all of them. Follow the instructions and try to play a Blu-ray high definition disc in your PlayStation 3 console. If it works, you can skip the remaining steps.
2.Check to see if you updated the firmware recently. Versions 3 of the PS3 firmware introduced a bug that caused the Blu-ray player to stop operating as it normally does. Repair shops can fix the corrupted firmware. You can reinstall it yourself if you know the procedure. If this does not apply, you may need to replace your PS3's DVD player
3.Take apart the PS3. The screws needed to remove the PS3 cover are on the bottom. Take the cover off of the unit carefully. Set the screws aside so you do not lose them. You may need to remove the tamper proof seal to do this. Remove the screw underneath the seal.
4.Remove the lid. There are seven more screws under the top of the PS3 lid. This lid covers the DVD Blu-ray drive. Remove the screws and take the secondary cover off gently.
5.Pull the lid off gently. You can now get to the Blu-ray drive. Remove the power cords and the data cable. Do not take these off of the controller board if you do not have to.
6.Place the old Blu-ray drive aside. Get a Phillips head screw driver and remove the circuit board. Place it aside. Pry the board of the old PS3 drive off carefully. When you see the wires attached, remove the wires from the board.
7.Put the old circuit board on the new drive. Place the connector on the bottom. Screw the new circuit board onto the old drive. You must use the old controller or the drive will not work.
8.Reattach the cables to the new PS3 Blu-ray drive. Place the drive back into its original slot carefully. Use the mounts on the drive and the controller to find the correct place. The mounts stabilize the drive.
9.Put the secondary lid back on your PS3. Use the seven screws you removed earlier from your console to do this. Put the final lid over the top and place the screw into the area underneath the tamper proof seal. Close the seal and try out your new DVD drive.
If the Blu-ray drive on your PS3 stopped functioning because of a problem with the drive itself, repairing the drive will work. If the controller circuit board went bad, you will need to return the system to Sony itself.

The game works against you a lot, some random things like touching a car can see you get a dive through, whereas the opponent can ram you off the track and go on without any issue.  Also kerbs are inconsistent, as a result I cannot do Barcelona as I spin as soon as I even have ideas of going near to one!  Your invalidated laps are definitely not down to you!

After playing this game a short time and evaluating my
driving skills I vow to never bad mouth any driver in F1

Don't recall if you've said so or not, are you playing with a wheel or just a game controller? The game is impossible to lay down a good lap without a wheel.

I'm playing with a Momo wheel with all aids turned off except
auto shift.

Did you fine tune your wheel setting?

I'm used to EA F1 Challenge 08-02 with the 03,04, qnd 05 mods and
GP4.This one seems to handle better without messing with the setups,so
I hope practice makes perfect
