Title: What we need to know about the Bahrain F1 outer circuit
Post by: John S on December 03, 2020, 04:24:02 PM
Looks like there could be fun in the first quali session with drivers queing and attempts to get slipstreams.

Two things to look forward to this weekend.
The new track layout with high-speed straights and Russell in Lewis's car.

I know that it would never happen, for a million reasons, but maybe once both championships are decided, the car/driver combos become a lottery.  I know it would have a huge impact on the midfield teams where a few points can mean millions of dollars, but it would put on a great show for fans.  (And if the championship is decided in the last race, that should be a great show too)

I do like the idea of a different track layout.  I don't know that F1 would be interesting if EVERY track was like this, but once every few years puts in some variety.

Saw an article recently that said Monza was seeking funds to conserve and restore the banking so racing could resume using it. Don't see how a high downforce car could run on it, but it would be interesting.

Car swapping will never happen look at the problems of GR fitting into LH's car and then there's the information which will get spread back and the costs so it'll have to be a dream for you.

They have replaced the concrete blocks from Grosjean's accident with a tire barrier. Still looks pretty temporary. Bell reports that his helmet, which exceeds FIA requirements, exceeded their expectations. No hot gasses entered during his escape from the car and the only serious damage was to the tear offs. The face shield under the tear offs was undamaged.

I had never considered that the crash helmet was also designed to protect a driver's lungs, which is fantastic!  I don't know if there is a proper motorsport museum, or if each track has its own, but to quote my favourite professor:  "It belongs in a museum!"

Probably the hardest part of motorsport safety is there are so few crashes in any specific circumstance it's hard to predict them all.  A barrier or crash structure might account for 100% of previous crashes, but then someone is going to find a new way to crash at the wrong angle, wrong height and wrong speed.  Hopefully some better structures for the track will be installed in the future.
