Yes it's back! but (fortunately) with a difference. Last years advent competition pushed many people over the edge so I've decided to change concept, (maybe one or two of you will still end up in a padded cell), let me know what you think.
The Competition (Please read carefully)
Every day for the first 24 days in December a Question or Letter will be placed on the GPWizard advent calendar (navigation at the top of the page). Answers to the questions also represent a letter. i.e Answer = Jensen Button then the letter for the day will be either 'J' or 'B'. This will be clearly indicated on the day.
The aim is to collect 24 individual letters and rearrange them into a Christmas sentence. This year the sentence will not be an obvious one.
Once you have the complete sentence you will need to either PM or Email me with your answer. It is in your interest not to post your answer on the site as members who have not been following the competition will all know your answer.
I will only accept answers received on 24th December.
If more than one correct entry is received then the winner will be chosen at random. It would not be fair to accept the first answer due to worldwide members time zones.
If you miss a question or letter, then you can still try and complete the sentence, it will just be a little harder for you.
Any questions or comments? Please post them below for all to see.
The Prize
A picture of World Champion Sir Jack Brabham - hand signed by Sir Jack Brabham himself.
Limited to just 500 copies worldwide. This superb print depicts triple World Champion Sir Jack Brabham in his 1966 Championship winning Brabham Repco. The print has been hand signed by Sir Jack Brabham. Includes a photo of Sir Jack signing. A2 in size (approx 23.5" x 16.5").
The Rules
One Question or letter will be placed on the advent calendar per day.
Answers to each Question will represent a letter i.e if the answer is Jensen Button then the letter for the day will be either 'J' or 'B' as indicated on the day.
The completed Christmas sentence must be PM or Emailed to me on 24th December - all submissions before or after this date will be dismissed.
If more than one correct entry is received then the winner will be chosen at random.
Good Luck!

-
Great prize again Wiz.
I have only just got over last year's advent competition.
-
I think today's is a bit too easy :P
-
Great prize, Wizzo! You are far too good to us!
And thank you for the format change. I'm still getting over last year's competition, too!
-
Thank guys, thought I'd give you all a break from playing hunt the letter.
I think today's is a bit too easy
Too easy eh? Lets see if you're still saying that at the end! Mwahahahahahaha >:D
-
Thank you for letting us in gently. I'm sure it will get harder later on ;)
-
Two days in and my sanity is still intact. I prefer this so much to last year's torture.
-

I would be except i've forgotten the first one and forgot to look yesteday lol
-
I would be except i've forgotten the first one and forgot to look yesteday lol
:fool:
Don't worry if you miss a few, you can probably still work it out. Plus I will have a bonus letter day where you can ask for a letter that you missed. :D

ooh cool
-
Wiz, are we going to get a hangman type sentence of dashes broken into words. :DntKnw:
-
You probably won't need it Ian, but I will put the /---/ etc with the last letter on the 24th.
Really, I get the impression some of you think I actually enjoy this kind of torture. :tease:
-
You mean you don't ? ::)
-
Bring on some Questions!
TheStig
-
Your wish is granted :D
-
and its a good one
-
and its a good one
I take it you are saying this with a poker face on Dare, and have got to dig deep for the answer like the rest of us!
-
I haven't started digging yet and the good news is last years
contes got harder day by day
-
I even knew what kind of engine! ;)
-
still too easy, only took me 45 minutes of
research on this one
-
if anyone wants to tell me the answer to this one it would be great. for the last few days i didnt know what the fuss was about but this latest question has me stumped.i dont know where to start.
-
This year's competition is a breeze compared to last year's. Last year we had a letter somewhere on the site every day. Some days it took two hours to find it.
-
Yeah, that was brutal. I think I only found 5-6 letters.
-
I guess i should count myself lucky. Im gonna have to put some effort in and work for the win.
-
greener, last year Wiz gave us all brain damage with this comp, I've still not found todays answer yet either
-
Tell me about it mate ive been searching the web for ages and cant find the answer. I might have to save this one for Wiz's free letter day.
-
Try an F1 statistics web site in conjunction with a decent F1 encyclopaedia. It's possible to tell the answer from the engine displacements of the cars. I don't want to give any more clues in case it gives the answer away completely.
-
find out what years the turbo era involves then a little detective work
-
So thats your surname Dare "Columbo". Hehe
-
day 7 a piece of cake, think I'll start dusting the
wall off soon,hehe
-
Does anyone know which letter from day7's answer we have to use
-
If its a one word answer greener, then just use the first letter. :good:
-
I am still looking for three letters from last year if anyone can help. :D
-
Day 8,aren't we the sly one
checking the net for a nice frame
as I type
-
I managed to miss day 6 lol
-
you can use your miss a day later on or
bribe the Wiz now
-
Ash Wednesday in Rio??? What has that got to do with motor racing? I think the evil Wiz from last year has taken over again. :'(
-
Just levelling the playing field a little SR, some of you guys are F1 experts, perhaps a few general knowledge questions will have you hunting around to. :tease:
-
Wiz, you are a dead man because I am soooo fick, I have been seaching the web, round all those devious links when all of a sudden a little voice piped up and said, "Oh dad, surely you know that's........."
-
That was a mean question :(
Luckily I remember the answer from when I was looking up Swedish Christmas celebrations for a school project and couldn't resist looking through the rest of the book...
-
I have helped a member with a PM so it is only fair that I share the wizdom. ::)
Today's question (8th) does not refer to Shrove Tuesday but infact refers to (big clue) Fat Tuesday in Rio.
Never let it be said that I'm not fair. :D
-
Hehe, your evil Wiz, but at least your fair. :good:
-
I don't think i'd be happy with this selection on Countdown.
-
Sad to say I got the general knowledge question yesterday straight away but am struggling with the Williams test driver.
-
See, something for everyone.
I wish I could be a fly on the wall when you see some of these questions. :DD
-
That is some selection of letters so far Wiz, have you a shortage of vowels in your book.
-
mmmmmmmm..... what do you mean? :DD
-
Oh no, don't say I have a lot wrong. :-[ thats not asking for a clue either Wiz, but if you see your way........................ :P
-
Only time will tell my friend, if you've been looking them up correctly then you'll be just fine.
OK everybody, Ian has asked for a vowel, so you can blame him for tomorrows question! :tease:
Don't worry though - it will get harder. >:D
-
Cheers Wiz, drop me in the doghouse why don't you. ::)
-
mmmmmmmm..... what do you mean? LOLROF {GPWizard - 4 comments ago}
I think there was a clue in there somewhere. At least I feel easier about the preponderance of one particular letter so far.
-
Another easy question :)
-
I'll not lose any sleep over today's one
-
Only about the vowels or lack thereof.
-
we got a vowel today Ali. :D
-
Ezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
-
Huh ?
-
Time to raise the game then? :o
-
How's everyone doing?I have to admit
:'(I don't have them all
-
Totally random today - good luck!! :DD
Remember you still have you bonus letter day to come where you can ask for any one missing letter you need. Don't waste it, try and look up every answer as I have some killer F1 questions to come.
-
Evil Wizard >:D
took me 2 hours to find this one
-
Yawn, yawn, this was soooooooo easy, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
-
Dinosaurs ?????????????????????????????????????????????????
-
Steven, you have to remember there are a few on here. :DD
-
I found a ten-lettered Argentinian dinosaur of that era matching the description - but the letters specified don't match! Are they supposed to or are we getting two letters today?
-
one letter I assune Ali
-
Dinosaurs? Even I'm not that old! :swoon:
One Google search - 45 seconds! ;)
-
I'm pleased to say that I found today's easier than yesterday's. The lack of vowels still worries me though...
-
Only two vowels so far, unless I've got it wrong. :fool:
-
I think some people are going to find the Flying Finn very tricky.
-
I think some people are going to find the Flying Finn very tricky.
Really? I thought I would get all the easy ones out of the way! ::)
Bonus Letter Day coming this weekend everybody - watch out for an announcement in this thread.
-
I thought the 'Flying Finn' was one of the easiest.
-
Did you read the question Ian?
Which F1 driver was first called, "The Flying Finn"?
I thought that was a tough one. :DntKnw:
-
No probs Wiz, I'll pm the answer to you if you like, but don't reply until the comp is over.
-
Hi guys which letter did we have to use from day 17s answer. For some reason my Advent page was blank today.
-
Greener, Question was: Which F1 driver was first called, "The Flying Finn"? Answer was the 2nd letter of Surname - hope you're enjoying it!!
-
Today's answer will NOT be given in the Bonus Letter Day this weekend.
Is that because you couldn't figure it out yourself, Wizzo? :nono:
-
Ha Ha of course not Cos.
Its because I thought you lazy lot my just skip it rather than try and work it out! :tease:
-
Too right Wiz, if your going to give a bonus answer make sure it's for a hard one. :D
-
Arsenal Football Club??
-
American Football Conference?
-
The AFC is motor sport related of course. ::)
Apologies for removing yesterdays question early, I've copied it below if anyone missed it.
1.How many seasons did Bruce Mclaren drive for Cooper?
2.How many Grand Prix did Michele Alboreto win while at Tyrrell?
3.How many Grand Prix starts did John Love make outside of his home country?
Q1-Q2+Q3=?
You need the last letter of the answer. i.e TEN would be N.
-
thanks Wiz
-
:yahoo: BONUS LETTER DAY! :yahoo:
Here's your chance to ask for a letter that you either missed or just couldn't get the answer to - Simply PM me with either the question or the day and I will send you the answer. Remember to choose your question wisely.
As a bit of an added bonus I know a few people asked me what AFC stood for in one question. AFC= Automobile Club de France.
You'll be pleased to know you're over the worst of the questions now and things will start to get a littler easier. Rest assured you will still be able to guess the phrase even if you have missed 4 or 5 letters so, never give up my friends.
-
As a bit of an added bonus I know a few people asked me what AFC stood for in one question. AFC= Automobile Club de France.
Shouldn't that be ACF? I can't remember the second part of that question now lol
-
AFC :DD Sorry all, that will teach me to set the questions when I'm half asleep! The full question was:
1.In which year was the ACF formed?
2.How many main sponsors did the Lotus team have between 1968 and 1990?
Q1-Q2=? Last letter of year (i.e. 1996-5=1991 Ninety Ninety One = E)
-
This Abba drummer, do you mean his best F1 finish or best finish in any motorsport Wiz
-
Best F1 finish me old mate.
Who would have thought, an Abba drummer in F1....???
-
He wasn't the fastest driver ever but he had a reputation for being able to do the same time lap after lap after lap better than any other driver ever. Apparently he had a great sense of rythm. ;)
-
:good: Nice easy one today Wiz, cheers
-
It's not looking much like a sentence yet
-
...and with only one more letter to go. :DntKnw: :fool:
-
Indeed, and I am only missing two others. I could of course have got them all wrong :-[
-
You could be right there Slugs, looking at the letters I have I'm thinking, uh oh. I can make a lot of nothing at the moment.
-
Der, I got 24 letters and thats it, not a clue, :DntKnw:
-
As promised here is the sentence in a 'hangman' format. All the letters given in the 24 answers fit the spaces to make a Christmas message.
-----/----/----/--/---/---/---
All entries must be sent by PM to me today (24th December), don't worry I will allow for different time zones and will check the date and time on the PM to make this fair for our members around the world.
If more than one member submits the correct answer then the winner will be chosen at random.
Good Luck!
Wiz
-
Good grief, HELP
-
I think I have definitely got some letters wrong, from what I have I could make a guess, IF, I had some different letters
-
Lol good grief indeed.
-
Merry Christmas - I give up. I only got 14 letters (missed a few questions and can't answer a few more), and not a clue.
-
Wow this must have been a tough one. Don't give up! Remember this is not a famous phrase, its a Christmas message for me.
If I don't receive any correct answers then I will post the questions complete with answers so you can try to arrange the letters in the correct order.
-

Is that a Christmas message 'for me' or 'from me'
-
that should read from me.
You'll kick yourselves when you see what it is. :tease:
-
I think I have them all except two and I can't rearrange them in the right order lol
-
I now have some correct answers, so it can be done.
:good:
-
You and me both Slugs. :DntKnw: >:D
-
was fun to play... but I'm not answering as I am not interested in the prize... have a great christmas and new years all my fantatsic friends.... not long till i move to Brisbane... I'll be offline for a while... so dare... I'll do my best to get you an accurate spreadsheet as soon as I can
-
I have all the letters and have not a clue what the message is. Now that I have th hangman clue I will try again later.
-
It's no good try as I might I can't make the 18 letters I've got, I missed a few days clues, fit the hangman grid. Good luck the rest of you and I hope you all have a "Wizard" Xmas.
John S.

Given up, conceded, surrendered, yielded, ceded, DEFEATED. :swoon: :swoon:
-
Ive been stuck in bed with man flu for over a week so havnt seen the questions since day 17. I gave it a go but my weakened brain had no chance.
-
I came, I saw, I failed bleeding miserably.
There is always next year.
-
Half the clues didn't make sense to me and the rest (bar one) are consonants - I fail to see how anything coherent can be pulled out from what I've got.
-
Not as bad as me Ali, I guessed it but did'nt post it, what a mug eh.

Thanks for the congrats and thanks for the prize wiz. It really is a great prize. I'm going to get it framed with the photo and certificate.
It turns out I had 4 answers wrong and I missed 3 days but took a punt on the sentence anyway because I couldn't think of anything else to fit the number of words and letters. Glad I did now :yahoo:
-
Way to go Slugger.I had my letters scattered
on note pads everywhere. But I doubt if I
would have got it anyway.
-
Well done Slugger.
I thought I had all the letters but I had 3 wrong due to extreme stupidity so couldn't make anything close to sense from them.
