Title: Smartguns are here
Post by: Wizzo on February 03, 2010, 11:32:56 AM
A German company known as Armatix has made a smartgun.  This pistol is programmed not to fire unless you get a wireless arming signal from a special wristwatch.

As you can see from the photo, there is a green light. It means you can fire the gun. A red light means you can’t fire it. The lights on the gun remind me of the phasers in the last Star Trek film.

If a bad guy manages to get your gun off you, then he can't shoot you with it (unless he gets your watch too), good idea huh?

Colt debuted a similar system back in the mid-1990's. They used a ring instead of a watch, and based the system on their model 1911A1 .45 ACP pistol. The system is called Magloc.

There has been very little interest in the system, since it would also prevent another good guy from using the weapon. Now, there are also fears that a simple jamming device, like the cell phone dampening fields used in many secure sites, would render the weapons useless.
