Title: Alpine to contest WEC LMP1 as well as F1 next year
Post by: John S on September 14, 2020, 04:07:35 PM
Will this all come under Cyril Arbitiboul's remit as Renault have put him over to the Alpine brand?  :DntKnw:

Renault seem to want get the jump next year ahead of Peugeot's return to LMP 1 in 22. Should make WEC more interesting next year anyway.

Renault would like to put the Alpine brand on a par with AMG and M-Power. Those brands have brought luster and profits to Mercedes and BMW and with all the racing success Renault have had down through the years, they would like to get in on the action.

I'd like to see all the F1 teams having presence in other series.

Maybe it doesn't make sense to squeeze out the existing competitors, but part of what makes Ferrari Ferrari is how ubiquitous they are in racing.  McLaren used to race other series.  Red Bull sponsorship shows up everywhere.  I know that Williams  was a 'one man' operation for a long time, but now that they're just another corporate team, there's a brand to build.

Counting teams running as F1 teams:

Mercedes: Formula E, GT3 sportscars
Red Bull/AlphaTauri: MotoGP, Moto3
Ferrari: various sportscars
Renault/Alpine: various sportscars
Racing Point/Aston Martin: WEC
McLaren: GT3 sportscars
Alfa Romeo: none this year, but was in last year's Italian Touring Car championship
Haas: none this year
Williams: none this year

7 teams currently race in non-F1 series, with one of the others, I think, only not doing so due to COVID-cancellation and knock-on effects. Haas is a young team and hopefully will develop capacity to run in other series, and Williams has chosen to put more emphasis on supplying championships via Advanced Engineering, than competing in them in recent years.

Haas deserves at least an asterisk for their involvement with the Stewart-Haas NASCAR team. The two teams' headquarters are right across the parking lot from each other.
