Nice article. I hated McLaren during the Can Am years. They just won race after race and made it look easy, yet no one else could do it. The cars were immaculate and actually rather simple and straightforward. Bruce said they raced in the Can Am to finance the F1 program. Well done Sir.

I miss that attitude in F1.  I mean, I joined in 1996, so I really missed that era, but still, Ferrari and McLaren were both built on the same attitude.  I'd love to hear that the main reason Mateschitz continues to sell cans of Red Bull is to fund the racing team!

Mercedes, Alpine, they're clearly there to promote their road cars.  I even feel like Haas is more interested in promoting his tools than winning races.

Williams is something else again... it's now an investment that is supposed to pay off at some absurd amount in some vague future.  (Sauber/Alfa and McLaren are in this category now too I suppose)

Reckon their investment in Williams has already paid off handsomely Jeri, if you consider what Andretti was prepared to shell out for Sauber/Alfa  team.
Wish I could double my money in a year or 2.  ;)

'Got to see a bunch of biggies at the 1969 Bridgehampton CanAm. Q'ing 1-2 in the morn', so confident were they that they skipped the Saturday afternoon qually and went water skiing. They did maintain the front row.Bruce and Denny's M8Bs finished the usual 1-2 result.

The M8A was my body of choice while 1/24 scratchbuilt slotcar racing in '69.

'Painted a couple in Gold Leaf Team Lotus colours (decaled on the nose as "McLotus" ala Dan's 1968 "McLeagle" M6.) for a friend and myself. Added homemade balsa wood wings (covered in Reynolds aluminum foil :)) to turn them into Bs. The wings, of course, did not last long on either of our cars the first night we used them :fool:......'looked neat at first tho'.(Yeah, we were both Lotus fans ;))
