Title: Silverstone Classic
Post by: davewilson on April 21, 2007, 07:31:15 AM
GREAT days may lie ahead for British motor racing in the guise of Lewis Hamilton, but the great days of the past are to be celebrated in style at this year's Silverstone Classic meeting.

The home of the British Grand Prix yesterday launched their July celebration of eight decades of motor racing with news that the Daily Express have struck a three-year association as title-backer of the International Trophy race.

Last year, the Daily Express revived our link with the race after a three-decade hiatus and have cemented it with this deal and the return of the "Daily Express Bridge".

A spokesman said that the Daily Express International Trophy race would be a "stunning highlight" of the meeting on July 27-29.

The Trophy was run annually from 1949, when won by Alberto Ascari's Ferrari, until 1975 when Niki Lauda triumphed. Manfredo Rossi won last year in a 1974 Martini Brabham.

Another highlight will be the 25th anniversary of the Porsche 956. Derek Bell, who debuted the car at Silverstone and won  Le Mans five times, will be back to drive the original.

"I'm also going to drive a Surtees TS Formula One car but it's the Porsche I am looking forward to most," he said.

Advance day tickets range from £15 to £20 with a three-day ticket costing £35. Call 08704 588260 or  visit http://www.silverstone.co.uk/classic
