Drivers in the Monaco GP will be required to use 3 different types of tires, making it a 2 stop race and possibly creating a variety of strategies.

Former FIF1 & Alpine boss Szafnauer is making big claim about huge funding & motor industry backing for another team on F1 grid.

Now unless he's hitching his wagon to one of the many emerging Chinese car manufacturing giants the only name I can come up with is Hyundai. Anyone else got any ideas?

Formula 1 and Disney have signed some sort of marketing deal.

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/formula-1-and-disney-launching-mickey-and-friends-collaboration-in-2026.1GZ8gwZn7VLXWgxouTRzbG

Now, there is no mention of a 'Disney Grand Prix', and certainly no reason to expect there to be one.

HOWEVER, I think it makes a certain degree of sense
  • Disney owns ESPN, who broadcasts F1 in the USA, and is a multinational brand desperate for live content
  • Walt Disney World, in Florida USA, previously had an oval track used for IndyCar (IRL), NASCAR (Trucks) and a variety of smaller series.  They have experience owning and operating a track
  • Disney owns properties across the world.  With USA holding 3 successful races, adding a fourth American race might be a tough sell.  However Disney owns property in Paris.  They could return Grand Prix racing to France.  It could even be a French GP at a Disney owned track.  F1 is obsessed with running races through city cores, but what about a race through a fake core that can be remodelled specifically to be a race track.  We already have/had F1 tracks in Montreal, Melbourne and Sochi that are tourist attractions when they're not race tracks, so it's not an outlandish idea

Is this just a good strategic supply line for Audi, or sign they need help with F1 engine project?

I watched some of the qualifying for Indy today and was struck how useless their hybrid system is.  I don't know the details but I assume it's similar to the F1 system with an internal combustion engine augmented by a battery charger by regenerative braking.

All well and good until you realize oval racing doesn't really involve braking.

So over the four laps required for Indy qualifying, the drivers had access to a battery good for about 1/2 a lap.

How is this going to work over race distance?  1/2 lmao of push to pass charged up only with every pit stop?

Interestingly pole was won by Schwartzman, a rookie, who has sportscar experience. I don't know his exact race history, but I wonder if he has hybrid experience other openwheelers, such as Takuma Sato, don't have.

I expect mastery of this new system might determine who wins the 500

Heroes

Verstappen - What was that pass on lap 1? Incredible! Between that and unbeatable straight-line speed, Max had command all race.

Albon - The Williams had no right to be up there. It may have had help from the VSC/SC interventions, but that last stint was so quick - and it is a rare driver able to force Leclerc of all people to make a boundary overstep mistake.

Hamilton - Speaking of, it would have been so easy for them to have let driving frustrated turn into driving into the very low points at the back of a DRS train. Instead, both Hamilton and Leclerc. I'm giving Hamilton this one because of how beautifully he handled the last three laps of the race, but their success required both of them to show electric performance in a car that's not really up to that standard at this time.

Zeroes

Pirelli - C6? Cnothanks. It lasted about 4 corners. It was a pure distraction at Imola. It's hard to imagine any track, except maybe Monaco and the newly-resurfaced Suzuka, where it would last a whole lap and therefore be worth bringing again.

Sulayem - More attempts to stifle legitimate criticism and shut down safety conversations, masquerading as being more lenient about several issues that shouldn't be penalised at all, and still retaining the swearing regulation that prevents the drivers from answering some questions at the press conferences truthfully. (Yes, this is going to be Sulayem's "jar of lard…"

Briatore - The driver swap was a mistake. Given the level of disruption Alpine's already experiencing, it would have been a mistake more or less regardless of who was exchanging seats with whom. I feel like that disruption, not the names of the people in the seats, is the real obstacle, and Briatore's just making it worse.

There are reports that Carlos Sainz Sr is angling for the FIA presidency.

Honestly, I don't know enough about him to say if that's a good or bad idea, but he's got to be an upgrade to the current office holder.

I don't know if the FIA has any bylaws to reflect he would have influence over a series his family competes in.  I'm guessing with the level of corruption these international agencies usually have, there isn't and if there is, they're rarely enforced.  (Not to suggest that Sainz would do anything untoward.  Just make sure everything seems fair)
