Is that the 1966 film with James Garner??

Yes it is,if you haven't seen it you need to.Story
is kinda slow but the racing scenes make up for it.
Graham Hill has a part in it,and if you look you can
see other drivers of the day like Bandini.See it you
   won't be dissapointed.

I have seen this but don't remember much about it, I love the 'old style' racing so in a fit of madness I have asked Santa for a copy!

Did anyone ever see the F1 film with Sylvester Stallone? I never got round to it, I'm afraid I pre-judged it.

I think your talking about Driven with Stallone. It's
about Champ Car not F1.Please don't waste your
time, couldn't watch entire movie.Lousey plot and
    computer graphics racing scenes.

Ahhh my pre-judgment was right. I assumed it was about F1 because I remember Stallone wandering around an F1 grid...er...trying to pick up pointers I think???  :DntKnw:

I suppose you could always go for Days of Thunder

I can't name a car movie that is my fav, as there are aspects of all of them that lose points whether it's the crappy cg effects, or bad plot, or terrible acting, or the outrageous stunts they try to make you believe.....having said that, if i was to name a movie with pretty good driving and all the other aspects lining up....surprisingly it would be either Ronin (skipp suduths driving) or the bourne identity.  As both movies had people look into making the driving scenes as realistic as possible.

As for Grand Prix Wizard, i have seen the first scenes but after that, it lost me.....too slow....but too right about the racing, it was great.

Romephius I agree the acting and storyline
in Grand Prix lack a lot, you've gotta love
    those old f1 cars :D

The Monsa scenes show just how hard the
banking was on the suspensions. Not 100%
sure but I believe Jackie Stewart did the
driving for Brian Bedford, that's why his
charactor always wears full face coverage

I saw 'Two Lane Blacktop' with James Taylor and Dennis Wilson the other day. Really liked it, made in the early 70's about racing each other along Route 66, the prize being the other person's car.

The film is in the same vain as Vanishing Point and Easy Rider so gets a huge  :good: from me!

Grand Prix. Far and away the best ever.

2nd- LeMans, with Steve McQueen. No noticible plot, but lots of good racing footage. John Frankenheimer wanted McQueen for the lead in Grand Prix, but McQueen wanted to make his own racing movie.

3rd-the 1950's movie The Fast and the Furious. (No relation to the new one) John Ireland stars. Lots of classic sports cars- T series MGs, Jag XK 120s and 150s, TR2s and even a Jowett Jupiter and Nash Healey.

The all time worst is Stalone's "Driven". It was supposed to be an F1 movie, but Bernie said no way. (Even Bernie can be right every so often) That's why Burt is in the wheelchair - He's supposed to be Sir Frank. Gee, I wonder who the German fellow was supposed to be?

Have to agree Cosworth on Driven, not only
one of the worse car movies ever made, but
one of the worse movies ever made.

Winning with Paul Newman is fairly good
   with some excellent race footage.

Still waiting for a Wizard review of Grand Prix :yahoo:

The bad news is she can't drive so I have to accompany her on every shopping trip  :'( oh my god, my life's such a mess!  ::)

The funny thing is, she suggested watching a film at the weekend. I suggest what about Grand Prix that you bought me for Christmas?  :)
You've watched it she replies
WHAT!?  :o I watched 15 minutes of it before you dragged me away to do some odd job.  >:(
Oh, well we don't want to watch that now, what else is there.

So I made her watch Snakes on a Plane - bad film but she hates snakes - so it's not all bad.  :D

Title: Re: What's your favorite Car movie?

Thunder Road is my all-time favorite movie. It's the most true to life moonshine running movie ever made. It's Appalachian settings remind me of where I grew up. I've got it on both tape and dvd. Besides the cars, its got Keely Smith :D.

A bit of trivia about the film. Robert Mitchum's younger brother in the film is played by his real life son, James Mitchum. He was a last minute choice. Mitchum wanted Elvis to play the part, and Elvis wanted to do it. Mitchum just could never come to terms with Elvis's long time manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

One of the best car records of all time is Robert Mitchum's "The Ballad of Thunder Road." Oddly, his version isn't used in the film. They use Keely Smith's much slower version.

Ronin has some great car stuff, too. It was director John Frankenheimer's final film. He did a pretty good car film earlier in his life - Grand Prix.

Mad Max.  You gotta love the vehicles in that movie: cobbled-together bits of this and that, heavily armored, jump tanks stuck on wherever they'll fit, and helter-skelter chase scenes with lots of shooting and parts flying off and.. and...

Mel in black leather.

Yeah.

The Ford GT camera car that was used in making the film, and towed not only Montand and Bedford, but also Antonio Sabato, was driven by former WDC Phil Hill. Hill also played driver Tim Randolph.

Voice over artist Paul Frees was best know for another voice he did. So if Izo Yamura sometimes sounds like Rocky & Bullwinkle's nemesis Boris Badenov, now you know why.

I'ts not a car movie but I was impressed with a film called Hell Drivers made in the 50's and shown a few years ago on TV. Cowboy truckers working against the clock have a rough and accident prone life but the driving seqences are first class considering the vehicles and the era in which it was made. I think it is a British made film.

Has anyone else seen it?

Best through traffic race ever - Against All Odds.  I can't remember the stunt drivers names, but one guy was over 60 and the other was 18 or 19.  An amazing team.  They didn't wreck a car and it is about 8 minutes on film.  Precision driving like I've never seen - ok, the Driver was pretty good too, but this scene is much longer.  Anyone else remember it?  Rachel Ward ain't half bad to look at either.

The James Garner version of "Grand Prix" was great for the racing but I had a hard time with the new version where they interject interviews and show parts of "The Making Of" within the movie. Show that stuff at the end for those really interested.

The chase sequence in Bullet was very well done as it was in "The Seven-Ups" with Roy Scheider. This was not a very well known movie. Check it out and watch for the scene where a car tears off a parked car door at speed.

For fun "The Gumball Rally" is not a bad car movie as the scenes of the Ferrarri and AC Cobra racing are great.

Days of Thunder bored the hell out of me. Turn left, and again, again etc.

I won't be able to comment on "Driven" as I will not watch anything with that piece of wood, Sylvester Stallone.

I bet Cos can answer this.In the start of Grand Prix
when the driver in the red helmet is putting on his
goggles with the sound of the heartbeat, who is
the driver in the red helmet?

And another question,do you know why  Lotus
wasn't one of the featured teams in the movie and
why Jim Clark wasn't one of the drivers hired for the film
Title: Re: What's your favorite Car movie?
Post by: cosworth151 on May 15, 2008, 03:03:22 PM
I think the driver you mean is Mike Spence. You can see him a few moments before that in asix-way shot during the opening of the film. He was driving a Lotus 25 witha BRM engine that day. Sadly, Spence was killed at Indy two years later testing a Lotus 56 Turbine car.

I don't know why they didn't use Clark or Lotus. I've always wondered about that myself.

Here's a good car movie for Halloween. Spirits of the Dead. Made in 1969, it's based on three Edgar Allen Poe stories. Each is done by a different director: Loius Malle, Roger Vadim and Frederico Fellini. The cast includes Vincent Price, Brigitte Bardot, Jane and Peter Fonda and Terence Stamp. this is Stamp as Tony Dammit in the Fellini segment "Never Bet the Devil Your Head."

Lotus cars were used in Grand Prix, but they were called Yamuras. Chapman was probably the only one who would repaint his cars if you paid him enough. Clark had a reputation for extreme shyness, and disliked being distracted by anything when he raced, so he probably just refused.

#1 - The Blues Brothers

Elwood: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

Well gato your timing is perfect. I've just come back from watching Rush at the cinema and here's a resurrected thread about car movies. I haven't seen Pixar's Cars so can't comment on that, but I was more than pleasantly surprised by Rush.

After all the hype and good reviews, I was expecting something rather 'obvious', and to start with I felt the film was a bit lightweight and predictable. In hindsight though I think this was partly a reaction to watching it with my wife Anita, who does not go in for clichéd one-liners and macho sports films. But, she loved it from the start - the tale of two different men, the story of their relationship, and the sound of the cars didn't annoy her for once!

I must say, the film certainly picks up, the last half is pure drama, great entertainment, even if you know the whole story. Highly recommended, great fun.

I too enjoyed Grand Prix but preferred Le Mans. Grand Prix is too staged with all those wooden cameo parts played by drivers at the time. But Rush is in a different league. I can't make comparisons with the documentary Senna - being such a different genre. It's brilliant too.

Go see Rush!

I guess saying the entire Fast and Furious collection is too stereotypical, but....meh.

There are few movies that show as much love for cars as the Fast and Furious movies.  There are plenty of movies that feature cars getting trashed, but how many that feature cars being built up and restored (and then trashed)?

And welcome aboard!

As Cossie said, absolutely nothing wrong about it. I consider myself as a pilgrim of this franchise, so nice to have someone like you.

Hope your presence will enrich this forum, so welcome abroad !!

I am a bit surprised that No body mentioned about :

Taxi 1/2/3 (the French Version)

I think i will be borrowing the first two from your list. They sound pretty darn good. Thanks for the share!

Transporter 1/3

Most probably all of the above are Luc Basson Movies..

The Driver (short film endorsed by BMW)

I Like the Tokyo Drift of Fast and Furious, a lot less CG..

Good ones! I'm a Luc Basson fan myself.

There was a short lived TV series here in the States based on Besson's Taxi films. It was called Taxi Brooklyn. It features a tweeked Crown Vic in place of the films' Peugeot 904. Sadly, it only lasted a few months.

A good few car movies in my head, but I think I could justify placing "Christine" close to the top!

All the best,
Cal :)
