Title: How long can Piquet last?
Post by: Andy B on May 22, 2008, 04:34:34 PM
After watching the Thursday practice on the web I was going to put on here "whats the odds on Piquet lasting till France" but then Alonso binned it in the same place but I still think Piquet has not got to grips with F1 and will not last much longer.

If he does go who will step into the breach?
Davidson?
Sato?
Lucas Di Grassi? - He's the third driver.
Bruno Senna?

I dont have a clue to be honest but I'm sure that Piquet is close to going unless there is a sustantial change in his fortunes.

I think Piquet will finish the season and I think he will come good by the end of it.

They were speculating about that on Speed Channel's coverage of Thursday practice this morning. They said that the rumor around the paddock is that Piquet may have to face off against DeGrasse and Grosjean by mid-summer if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Di Grassi is Brazillian. That would please the sponsors (who demand a Latin American team-mate to Alonso), so this changes the equation considerably. If di Grassi is faster than Piquet Jr at any time, expect Piquet Jr to be dropped unless his manager's made an unbreakable contract (and if so he'll become a billionaire through selling on the technique to lawyers worldwide!)

Isn't Papa his manager?  That'll make the fallout a by louder if Nelson goes to the press

It'll be noisy, but if di Grassi looks faster than Piquet, I can see Flavio casually inserting his ear plugs and letting Piquet Sr. rant away.

I am surprised Nelson has been so quiet so far.  I guess we can expect stories of unequal equipment and the team favouring Alonso any time now.

He's probably been told outright that if he opens his mouth, the chances of his son driving after Monaco are gone.  Let's see if Nelsonho he can keep it off the Armco through the rest of the weekend.

I'm with Steven I think Piquet will finish the season but may find the team passes the chance to take up next year's option.

The test shoot outs are probably part of the process for next year and to light a fire under Piquet's backside as well.

I think todays performance confirms my view!

Watch for Flav to give the boot to Piquet.  I bet he lasts two more races tops unless he drastically improves.

If that was supposed to be a career-saving drive from Piquet Jr, I think it failed...

I thought at the time that he lost his way or something.  I guess he overcooked it and couldn't brake in time, but as it turned out, he would have been better to at least try to do the corner instead of bailing out.  I wonder if he went straght to Daddy's yacht instead of being the target of Flav's vein popping screamfest he was sure to get back in the Renault motorhome.

Considering how bad he has been I thought it a poor team decission to put him on drys at that point.

So who else is looking dodgy?
Coulthard? I'm glad I dont pay his insurance.

I hope this article is right and that Ant has a real chance at driving for Renault (or Sato for that matter).  Looks like Piquet's days are numbered, and he won't last the season unless...

From F1 Live:

Renault is still backing Nelson Piquet to up his game, but paddock rumblings suggest that the French team's patience will not last forever.

Indeed, it was rumoured at the scene of the Monaco Grand Prix that team boss Flavio Briatore is giving the struggling 22-year-old Brazilian only until Silverstone in July - three more races - to take a substantial step closer to the pace and performance of lead driver Fernando Alonso.

Moreover, the Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell reports that Alonso's scheduled running at the test following the Canadian Grand Prix has been scrapped so that Piquet, whose father won three world championships, can be in the car on all three days.

The loudest related rumour of all at Monaco, however, was that Briatore considers Super Aguri's laid-off race lineup of Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato as genuine candidates for Piquet's seat if he cannot improve in the near future.

Briatore half-backed Piquet's unimpressive first outing at Monaco as a Grand Prix driver.

"Nelson's race was disappointing, but Monaco remains a difficult test for a driver and it is a very unusual circuit," he said.

I must admit the enthusiasm for Davidson goes straight over my head.  I cannot see that he is other than a very average driver.  I know there are people who are convinced he is as good as Lewis but I have waatched Ant since he was in F3 and I can't see why Renault would sign him.  I am not sure why they would sign Sato either unless it is to try and get Nissan involved in the team.

Forgive me, I'm still a fan of his.  I said I 'hope', not that he has earned it.  Just commenting on the story.

As to the first asked question, Piquet will need to really pull it together as Grosjean is French, has Flav as a fan, has driven a Renault at Silverstone and is in the Renault Driver Dev Program.
He is only 21 but is a close second in GP2 points.
