One for all of us Baby Boomers out there. Cartoon caveman Alley Oop turns 75 tomorrow, 7 Aug. The dino-riding, time-travelling, club-carrying caveman was created in 1933 by V.T. Hamlin, and is now drawn by Jack Bender and written by Carole Bender.
Alley Oop has become a generic term for a lob shot in basketball. He also was the subject of a hit rock song by the Hollywood Argyles back in 1960. It reached #1 in the US and #24 in the UK. Oop and is dinosaur pal Dinny wee featured on a US postage stamp.
