I assume it was always a calculation.  He may have cost the the WCC, but he brought in more money than the team lost.  Horner has always talked about the WDC being the one people remember, and he'd gladly win that and lose the WCC.  Especially in the modern era were winning the WCC actually costs development effort.

Having a veteran driver in Perez who may not have the skill to win any more, but certainly has the skill to provide feedback on an F1 car has a certain value if your other driver is winning everything you care about.

At some point though, your team and sponsors are going to wonder what your goals are if you're okay with a driver who isn't providing the results they're expecting.  Red Bull as a racing organization has been a three ring circus for years.  Perez was one distraction among many, and while I agree it was time for him to go, I'm not sure his replacement will bring any stability.  And probably less cash.

I think RB wants a good 2nd driver but not too good as
to challenge Max. They should have signed Carlos

It seems the money is on Liam Lawson who has been on the RB books for six years and has spent plenty of time in the simulator so he knows the RB well.
I'm obviously biased as he's a Kiwi and it would be good to see him in the car along side Max but would he crash and burn as Brendon Hartley did. Remembering BH is a multiple WEC champion and a multiple Le Man winner but still struggled with the RB.
The choice it seems is due to be made next Monday but that does not mean it'll be announced then!

How many times have we heard Perez is out of the Red Bull car this year? Answer too many times to count!
So I'll believe it when it's announced.

Think Red Bull have gone cold on Colapinto after his multiple shunts of late, not to mention the high price James Vowles has put on him for only a loan deal for a couple of years.  :o
Time was teams paid someone else to give their protegees a year or more on the F1 grid.  ;)

With Isaac Hadjar still in with a good chance of being F2 champ this year it looks likely he will join Vcarb (or will it be Racing Bulls  :DntKnw:) for next term, & either Yuki or Liam will move up to the senior team.

I'm thinking Tsunoda may just get the call up, he has had a pretty good season - oh & his road rage now finally seems to be under control.  :D

Well I guess Sergio doesn't want to leave even though with the
best car on the grid he's 8th in WDC. Sorry Serge time to go

Not only is Perez's dad saying it's not true, but now I'm hearing rumours that Red Bull can't drop him as they're not sure if Verstappen's going to do what Rosberg did and quit F1 to become a dad. (He probably won't, but the uncertainty is at risk of staying Red Bull's hand).

Even if MV quit why would they keep SP?

I'm curious, how many WDC's were fathers when they won?  I know that Michael Schumacher was a father when he won, and Nico Hulkenberg.  I know that Max is a father figure, that would certainly count.

Checo reminds me of Godzilla - Dead at the end of almost every movie (or season in Checo's case) but always back for the next one.  ;)

Between 14 and 17:

Verstappen (stepdad)
Vettel
Damon Hill
Prost
Mansell
Piquet
Lauda
possibly Sheckter (not sure when his first child was born)
Andretti
possibly Fittipaldi (not sure when his first child was born)
Stewart
Rindt
Graham Hill
probably Denny Hulme (he had a child born the year he won the title but I am unsure exactly when)
Brabham
Fangio
Ascari
