I thought some of the oldies might like this

Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned

The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

Interesting to learn that F1 was relatively safe in the 50s and 60s, and it wasn't until the 70s that it truly became a bloodsport.  That would certainly explain why it took so long to actually adjust to the new safety hazards, I'm sure at the time even the most horrific crashes seemed like a 'one off freak event' instead of something to expect over and over again.

I'd also be curious of there's a link between F1/motorsports safety and consumer road  car safety

He mentioned that there was no pit lane speed limit in the 70's. In fact, the idea of a "pit lane" was something new. Before the 70's the only thing separating the pits from the racing surface was a painted line on the pavement. In 1970, a change to the rules "recommended" circuits build a wall between the pits and the racing surface.

― Bob Dylan
