Rear Wing Dimensions
« on: March 01, 2010, 05:46:15 PM »
Like many, I found last season's rear wing designs to be comically small (I know I'm getting used to it... but it still looks funny.)

However I never watched F1 during the 'turbo era', so was a little surprised to see this Williams come up in the random picture:

Looks like a fairly modern rear wing to me (size wise/at a distance)

I know, it's like all those starving orphan ads.  So skinny, and hardly any clothes!  So sad.

That Williams was a ground effects car. The majority of the downforce was generated by the sidepods. The wings were more just trimtabs to balance the car for each circuit. A few cars even ran some races with no front wings at all. In this era they could actually pass. John Watson came from 22ND or 23RD on the grid to win at Long Beach and other drivers made equally exciting runs from the back in other races. The good old days. :DD
