"It is fundamentally clear that the McLaren wing design is totally illegal," Renault managing director Bob Bell told BBC radio after the first practice session of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Friday.

Could this be sour grapes!!!!!!

As the system relies on a button activated by the left knee perhaps Bob Bell should have called it a legs rather than an arms race.  ;)

Renault with their record are the last you would expect to critisise others over the spirit of the rules, :o pull the other one Bob (leg that is :D) with your outrage. :P

Formula One SHOULD be an arms race.  If I want to watch drivers in identical cars, I've got NASCAR and IRL, or GP2 for that matter.

Absolutely...as one who can't stand the idea of a budget cap, bring on the race!  What's a few million for half a tenth of a second!

I'm okay with the concept of a budget cap.

I just want the rules thrown wide open.

(The problem with a cap is enforcement... it would be too difficult to police the massive international teams, especially those that are part of larger organisations)

Innovation should be encouraged absolutely.  I do not care for a budget cap, I think if you cannot afford F1, you should not be in F1, don't go trying to bring down the level of expenditure.  There have always been big teams and small teams.

It's the big teams that can afford to exploit the rules fully, and then the little teams copy them, thats life, if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

When the little Teams manage to copy the Big teams innovations, they will always lag behind, as the big Teams always always come up with something more innovative. That`s life!!!!

Big budgets don't really increase creativity... indeed, if you back the money truck up to an engineer, he's more likely to come up with something guaranteed, rather than risky.

Sometimes the best designs come within a constrained budget.

If you don't mind my mixing metaphors... a tight budget gives you Raiders of the Lost Ark, and an unlimited budget gives you Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

This is slightly off subject........But.....Renault need their heads examined. They petition the FIA to allow them to mod their engine which they say is down on power, then Vettel screws them up completely by posting 5th fastest time today, despite a brake problem.

To early to say if that is really the Red Bull true position, there were teams just running high and medium fuel runs in practice, maybe after Quali we shall know.

Anyway the engine power is what the FIA will take into account, the performance of the engine in various chassis is irelevant.

Bob Bell's comments are irrelevant; the FIA has cleared the McLAREN wing design as legal.
