Schumacher Buys Rare Supercar
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:48:59 PM »
Retired seven time world champion Michael Schumacher treated himself to an extravagant present ahead of his thirty eighth birthday on Wednesday.

The Cologne based 'Express' newspaper claims that the former Ferrari driver has splashed out on a Shelby Cobra Daytona Super Coupe -- one of the world's rarest supercars.

Only six of the original cars - valued today at several million dollars - were ever built in the mid Sixties, ironically in a bid to wrestle the GT title from dominant Ferrari.

I have seen one of these cars, mind you it was many moons ago.
I wonder if the Wizard could possibly find a picture?  So we can all view what he has treated himself to for his Birthday.

I have had a look around but could not find one before posting

I do believe that car is highly modified. Here's an "as raced" pix.

Some Daytona Coupe trivia:

Acording to lore, Pete Brock sat down with a photo of a leaf spring 289 Cobra frame, put a piece of tracing paper over it and sketched out the coupe body in one sitting.

Sadly, the great Aussie driver Peter Brock lost his life in the crash of a Dayton Coupe replicar last year. The first news stories I heard here in the States misidentified the driver as the designer Pete Brock.

Only the prototype had its body built in the U.S. The other five were bodied in Italy. The original had been missing since the 70's and showed up in California a few years ago as the ultimate "barn find." It had last been driven at Bonneville in speed record runs by Craig Breedlove of Spirit of America jet car fame.

The mid-sixties Howard Hawks NASCAR film "Red Line 7000" features a Daytona Coupe. One of the characters uses it as street transportation. In one scene, the driver has put it in a ditch and is picked up by the leading lady in an MG 1100.
