Was Vettel Silverstone move on Sutil fair of foul?
« on: July 13, 2010, 11:15:54 AM »

Force India's Adrian Sutil has criticised Sebastian Vettel after the pair made contact when the Red Bull man overtook for seventh place at the end of the race. "I had some good battles today but the last one was not fair," said Sutil. "Sebastian pushed me off the track and I lost seventh place. It's annoying."

IMO there was nothing wrong with Vettel's two wheels off the track manoeuvre pushing up the inside of Sutil, we see this often in other motor racing series and not enough in F1. This sort of overtaking is risky as contact in F1 is not quite as predictable as in tin top racing, I say well done Seb for putting the move on. Sure Adrian is sore about losing a place but he needs to stop whingeing and learn from it, after all he needs to get past cars ahead of him sometimes.

What does anyone else think, fair or foul ????

Fair.  It was as risky for Vettel to try as it was for Sutil.  He stuck it and grabbed the point.   :good: :good:

I'll give the move a  :good: too.

Vettel caught Sutil dozing just like MS caught
Alonzo doing the same a few races back

Fair  :good: It is essential that this type of move is allowed by the stewards otherwise there will be no overtaking at all.
In all other series 'hard but fair' overtakes are not only tolerated but aplauded. Drivers have to be confident that they can make decisive moves without fear of being penalised later.
Of course it can be difficult to interpret when 'hard but fair' has become 'dangerous cheating'.
My rule of thumb is that if Schumacher does it; it is definitely 'dangerous cheating' ;)

I think that Webber and Kovaleinan clearly demonstrated that it is difficult to engineer a genuinely 'dangerous' pass in a modern F1 car.  (Yes, there's risk to spectators and track officials.)  The risks the drivers take are only as to whether they finish or not.  Sutil's life wasn't in danger, nor was Vettel's.

It's time for more of the drivers to take risky moves.  I don't want to see the races turn into smashups, but if more drivers make moves like Vettel's, then it will become expected, and less likely to cause accidents.

I'd say fair. He kept two wheels inside the lines. I think that's how the rule reads.

I never thought of Mikey as a great passer. A few years ago when the Scot took a stroll down Hanger straight, Rubens and Michael  came out of the pits back in the pack. Rubens made several outstanding passes and eventually won, Michael barely made 4TH. I thought Vettel's pass was fair. He did not move over on Sutil like he did Webber in Turkey. If Sutil wants to shut the door on someone, he will have to do a better job.

The move seemed fair enough to me. It was more risky in Vettel's part as he needs the points for his title challenge and some is better than none when it comes to points. Really hope Webber beats the we t*t this year.  >:D
