terrifying!

If i were a racing driver i would be more scared of something like this happening than hitting a wall at 170 mph, or flying through the air

Jeez, was that two lucky drivers or what.
An aircraft landing is just a controlled crash.

Terrible impact! The driver of the burning car looked like he might have burned his hands. The medics appeared to be tending to them as they got in the ambulance.

Hats off to the safety team, which seemed spot on.

Wow that was a scary scary accident. I can't believe the mess of the car that was hit from behind, no wonder the fuel cell ruptured.

Anybody see an update on the driver who was apparently burned?

Thanks Scott. He looks pretty good, and he was moving his fingers a bit so maybe he'll be OK. He certainly seems to think so.

Fortunate that it happened right at the start/finish line and the safety crew didn't have to drive halfway around the track.

Remember Ralf Schumacher's shunt at Indy in what?...'95? The accident happened just before the pits and the rules stated the recovery team had to drive pretty much around the whole track before getting to him rather than just drive the 100 meters backwards down the track.

F1, always the home of the stupidest rules in racing.

It was in 2004. He blew a tire going into Turn 13 and took the outside wall, just past the end of the SAFER barrier.

I've often wondered why other series don't have multiple emergency crews placed around the circuit. IRL and NASCAR both do.

The NASCAR guys are the absolute best.  I've seen them there as the car is still moving (ok, in NASCAR the cars tend to slide a bit in the grass, but still).

F1 may have fairly high standards of safety, but the lack of professional safety teams (that's plural - I'd say at least 4 per track at a minimum) makes them look mickey mouse compared to the American series.  Really, with the money involved in F1, what would it cost to have 8 guys, 4 cars (preferably trucks) packed with extraction and fire equipment?
