F1: Ferrari Ditches Technical Director Costa
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:18:24 PM »
Ferrari technical director Aldo Costa has been replaced...
He has been moved aside to take on "new responsibilities," the phrase usually used by the company when a key race team member is deemed to have underperformed.

A short statement said: “Scuderia Ferrari announces that, as from today, Aldo Costa relinquishes his current position as Technical Director to take on new responsibilities within the Company.

“At the same time, the technical activity has been restructured in three areas: Director for the Chassis side is Pat Fry, Production is in the hands of Corrado Lanzone, while Engine and Electronics continues with Luca Marmorini. All three report directly to the Team Principal, Stefano Domenicali.”

Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

Gee, never saw that coming - ok maybe I really didn't see that coming, but you know if Nando gets lapped, somebody is going down.

Not only was Nando lapped, but he was leading the race on merit (as versus a temporary lead through pitstop shuffling).  When has anyone ever lead a race (on merit), and yet finished the race lapped, without suffering a mechanical problem?

I can't see that the chassis or areo was to blame for Nando's big loss of speed in the second half of the race, I'm leaning towards overuse of fuel in the early part of the race which allowed him to keep pace with the front runners. After Webber got past him Alonso was left comfortably in 5th, so they turned the wick down to (a) get to the finish and (b) to preserve engine life. The leaders went 'hammer and tongs' to the very end, Hamilton was told twice on the radio he could max out and use all the power the car had.

I don't think Ferrari should rely too heavily on Fry. he was responsible for a right stinker of a car in 09 at McLaren, the year before he left. Pat's old team seems to have put much more speed into the cars without him.

This is getting a bit like football.  A couple of bad results and manger is sacked.  Sam Michael having to fall on his sword and Aldo Costa getting moved aside.  Its a bit short-termist and who is to say the replacement will be as good?

An F1 season is short... a few bad results and you're getting a pretty small share of Bernie's pie.

We've seen that races can turn on one poor or brilliant call.
