Grand Am Race at Indy?
« on: June 17, 2011, 01:10:16 PM »
The Indianapolis Star reports that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is in talks with NASCAR to bring its Grand Am series to the track. The move would be made to try to bolster plummeting attendance figures for the race. Last year, there were 100,000 unsold seats.

The problem would be a one day turnaround from road course to oval. There is also talk of moving the Nationwide Series race from Indianapolis Raceway Park (a.k.a. Lucas Oil Raceway) to IMS.

The NASCAR Grand Am is a road racing that follows the standard NASCAR formula. They are 1960's tech tube frame cars, basically spec racers, with different trim to resemble the different marques.

I hope that they will do it right and go with a separate week-end for the ALMS

ALMS will never race at Indy. The track has slowly become a 1 lane track since the aprons were removed. That was shown by Hildebrandt's crash on the final lap, among other incidents. It's worse for the NASCAR boys because the cars are bigger and less able to pass in the draft. The excitement of seeing stock cars on the famous track has worn off and now fans want to see racing. They don't get the 100 passes for the lead they are used to. Not sure adding a support race of either type will help. That said, I quite like Grand-Am. The cars are evenly matched, the drivers race very hard, and aero has very little to do with the outcome. You can see the cars sliding around and the drivers have to actually manage the throttle. And yes, they are low tech, but the racing is good and not every series is F1.

I'd agree that the Grand Am is a very nice undercard spec racer series. It should be running as a prelim race on ALMS week-ends.

All NASCAR attendance, and TV ratings, are going down the tubes. It's not just Indy. The Grand Am (or ALMS) would run on the road course, not just the oval. I don't know if they would use the clockwise F1 circuit or the counterclockwise MotoGP course.

They had a test day there last year (?) and ran the F1 course. I think NASCAR is feeling the effects of Jimmie Johnson winning the title every year. He runs hard enough during the season to make the Chase, otherwise he is testing his set ups for the Chase. They might not have this problem if they had left the championship alone.
