Whats in a name?
« on: July 21, 2011, 08:49:43 PM »
This may have been discussed before but what do you think is the best ever F1 Driver name?  The coolest name ever in F1?

Hmmm interesting! I checked through the complete list of drivers on Wiki and came up with a few candidates:

Emmanuel de Graffenried
Fabrizio Barbazza (anyone with 3 "z's" in his name has gotta be cool!)
Birabongse Bhanubandh (I dare you to pronounce it right!)
Bill Cheesbourg (mmmmmmmmm)
Dieter Quester
Wolfgang von Trips
Joachim, Manfred & Markus Winkelhock

Best ever I'd have to go with Birabongse Bhanubandh
Coolest name I'd go with Wolfgang von Trips

Honourable mention to the three Winkelhocks!  :yahoo:

Can't decide which of this bunch is the oddest:-

Ivor Bueb

Paddy Driver

Huub Rothengatter

Otto Stuppacher

Desmond Titterington

The coolest has to be one of these:-

Juan Jover

Ernst Loof

Pete Lovely

or even.....  :swoon: Jenson Button.  - does sound a bit like a stage name don't you think.  ;)

The trickiest has to be :-

Mário de Araújo Cabral.  -  Well can you imagine commentators getting their tongues round it.  :D

Scott Speed is certainly a natural name for a race car driver.

Wolfgang Von Trips is the coolest though!

His full name was even cooler:

Count Wolfgang Alexander Albert Eduard Maximilian Reichsgraf Berghe von Trips

From what I've always read, he was a really cool guy, too.

Yes, he was! When he did radiobroadcastings, he used to sit on the floor, legs crossed. He also intruduced go-karts in Europe!

The longest names I can come up with are these three:
Count Wolfgang Alexander Albert Eduard Maximilian Reichsgraf Berghe von Trips
Jonkheer Karel Pieter Anthoni Jan Hubertus Godin de Beaufort
and of course:
Alfonso Antonio Vicente Eduardo Angel Blas Francisco de Borja Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton

Scott Speed must be within the list of funny Formula 1-driver names, just as Paddy Driver
John Love
What about Jean Max, or, as he officially was named: Max Jean
another cool sounding name: Noritake Takahara
or Archie Bryde (pronounce it, not read it...)
Guy Gale...

But I won't write my whole database down... ;)

Think I'll keep with Scott Speed, though...

von Tripps childhood nickname was Wolfchen (Little Wolf).

I wonder if Scott Speed is related to the 80's NASCAR driver, Lake Speed.

Dick Trickle has to be the best name ever, let alone for a racing driver.
I like this one though Ricardo Londono-Bridge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_Londo%C3%B1o and http://www.f1rejects.com/drivers/londono-bridge/index.html

As a child though the name Gilles Villeneuve and Nelson Piquet were unbelievably exotic and foreign.  I guess thats growing up int the west of Ireland though, if Ice cream was other than vanilla it was exotic!

I remember when I started watching F1, thinking Damon Hill had the best name in F1 because it was the only one I could pronounce...

Did you know Lake Speed was a world karting champion?
