Michael Schumacher returned to his motorsport roots on Wednesday, indulging his passion for karting by spending the day testing with the Tony Kart team in Italy.
The 38-year-old German retired from Formula 1 at the end of last season but already seems to be missing the buzz of driving on the limit.
In the run-up to Christmas he tested a kart at the Lonato circuit in Brescia and competed in a 24-hour kart race in his hometown of Kerpen.
Now Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Schumacher is in the midst of a two-day test with Tony Kart at the La Conca circuit in Muro Leccese, near the Italian town of Lecce.
He had a series of brief runs on Wednesday, first by himself and then with other drivers on track, and took his usual close interest in the work of the mechanics.
There are even suggestions that the seven-time world champion might take part in one or more rounds of the WSK championship this season – including at Lecce on May 13.
Schumacher is not averse to putting his pride on the line by competing with the cream of the world’s karting talent, as he proved in 2001 when he took part in the final of the world championship at Kerpen, finishing third in the second race.
