Return of the Dodge Dart
« on: December 07, 2011, 01:59:10 PM »
Dodge has announced that it will revive the Dart nameplate for an upcoming small car. The new Dart will replace the Caliper in 2013. The car will be based on a stretched version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta platform.

Dodge first used the Dart name on a bare bones version of its full size car in 1960. It later moved the name to Dodge's version of the Plymouth Valiant, replacing the Dodge Lancer name. Since Dodge didn't introduce a direct Mustang competitor until 1970 (Challenger), the Dart GT got most of the Barracuda's go-fast goodies. Before he went on to MG's, Triumphs and Jaguars, Bob Tullius's Group 44 ran 1966 Dodge Darts in the then-new Trans Am series.

I doubt that the new Dart will have such sporting credentials.
It will offer a choice of three four-cylinder engines.

A beautiful car. I got a little seat time in one about ten years back, driving around New Hampshire in the fall. Over here, they were sold as the Daimler SP 250. Dodge sued them over the use of the Dart name.

Stuff a Dart built on a Fiat platform, the only Dart worth a mention
is the beautiful Daimler Dart from the 60s.

Actually the north american Dodge Dart as shown here was a wicked car.  Didn't have the lines you'd normally expect in a hot rod, but plenty of pink slips were won by these devils.  One of my sister's boyfriends had a '72 that was just amazing.

Daimler Dart is for country driving with a pipe in your mouth   :P :P

Not that I think they'll really come up with something special, but you never know...

The Daimler had a wonderful little V8 engine and performed beautifully. What killed it was Jaguar buying Daimler. They suddenly had a car with performance about equal to their then-new E-Type with a notably lower price tag.

The Dodge could be quite a potent car in other ways. Back in the 1980's, I help a member of my family transplant a heavily tweaked 413 B-Block wedge, with 2-4bbl's on a cross ram, into a 62 Dart. It was one mean street-strip racer.

The engine compartment was bottomless for a relatively small car.  Plenty of room to upgrade  :D :D

Snore...this is it.  It screams Toyota to me.  It'll never be classic anything with boring-a$$ looks like this.

From straight on the back, it looks a bit like a shrunken Charger. From any other angle, it's a complete snooze IMO.

Interior looks nice but the outside reminds me of
a Aveo doctored up

Read that it's based on the Alfa Giulietta. The R/T should be pretty hot.

The car looks like a tight fit.
