I'm pretty happy there is someone fighting against internet control by government.  And I think most of those at Anonymous are quite a bit smarter than those at the FBI and other government agencies.

Yeah yeah, all very nice but we can't all do what we like the whole time.

So Anonymous feel they have the right to interfere when there is something they don't like, but what ethics or morality are Anonymous working to. I'm afraid I read Anarchy instead of Altruism in these sort of groups.

I'm afraid I don't quite understand people who download stuff through a torrent without paying for it. If you want Bonnie Raitt to keep making music, you have to be sure she gets paid for her efforts. Fair is fair, or am I hopelessly old fashioned?

Most musicians make their money selling t-shirts at their live concerts.  The record labels keep most of the money made through music sales.

That's why music is free on the radio... you won't go to a concert or buy a CD if you've never heard of them.

I pay for my music, but I am pretty pleased I can choose it song by song now and not have to shell out $20 for a CD I only want one or two songs from.  Movies are a gray area - I fon't like to pay $30 for a DVD I will watch 3-4 times.  Renting is an option, but I hate renting anything more than once even though might like to watch it more than once (comedies and chick flicks I watch with my wife, I generally legitimately rent).  I sometimes pirate movies for this reason.  As for TV shows, I see no point in handing over a red cent when the show has been aired on free-to-air TV, it's actors and bills paid by the advertisers and studio has made a profit.  I ALWAYS try to find these for free.

Yeah but how do you feel about someone skipping out on paying a bill for something at your place Scott, and how would you feel about someone else who encourages and helps them do it?

Radio is free to listen to, but the stations must keep logs and pay royalties on every cut they play. T-shirt sales are pocket change to top artists, their money comes from ticket sales, CDs, legit downloads (Itunes), concert DVDs, and royalties.

One doesn't really compare with the other John.  I think Cos's example was better.  Would you close down a car rental company because their car was used in a robbery?  I guess not.

I pay for my music - all of it.

Internet media is simply an added bonus for Movie studios and TV.  In most cases the costs were recouped many times over (TV - Advertising, Movies - Theatre and DVD sales)  I would suggest that most people who pirate movies and TV probably wouldn't have paid for it in the first place - they simply would not have rented it or bought the DVD's because they either don't have the money or they don't consider the media they are pirating to be of high enough quality to spend money on.  It doesn't justify the 'theft', however it nullifies the cry of lost revenue by the studios.  According to recent reports, pirating is legal in Switzerland...but skipping out on a hotel bill isn't.   :P :P
