Did Sato throw it away or did Dario squeeze him out?
« on: May 29, 2012, 10:01:13 AM »

Watch vid, judge for yourself. My view - Dario put heavy squeeze on.  ::)

Sato says it was Dario's fault:

I agree with the TV commentators: Sato should have waited until the exit of turn two.

Rahal kept warning Sato the whole race to  take it easy, with his
past history no one who knows Sato was surprised when he
crashed out.I didn't see where Dario was in the wrong and
besides Sato should have waited till turn 4 where most last
lap passes at Indy are attempted.

Of course Dario squeezed him.  It's the Indy frickin' 500!  You don't just give up the lead on the last lap because someone is taking you low.

I think Dario left the minimum amount of space that was fair.  Sato tried to thread the needle and failed.  As the passing car he should know that a) the lead car is going to try to make it difficult and b) it wasn't the right place to pass

Well said Jeri.

History aside, I do feel sorry for Sato - would have been quite a win for him.

Sato's take on his attempted pass. From it I get Dario was
in the wrong for not getting out of Sato's way

Where does Sato get, "Well below the white line?" I watched the race and I've replayed Dare's vid on Sato's interview on slowmo a few times and I'm blowed if I can see where Sato's wheels went below the white line, in fact it looks as if he hardly touched it.

The crash was almost identical to Marco's a few laps earlier. Different camera angles show they both touched (at least) the white line. It's fairly well known that the paint has less grip. Ask Danny Sullivan. Sato made his move both too late and too early. He didn't get along side Dario early enough. As Jeri said of course Dario pinched him, it's the 500. He should have waited till turn 4 and passed him on the run down to the finish.

Sato had to commit otherwise he wouldn't be able to get anything out of it. Well it was upto Dario, whether he would give room or squeeze, either is racing and Dario choose the latter..

Its Indy Dario did nothing wrong, but could have made it much more interesting than finishing under flag, but nothing to complain about it.

Drafting is quite an art.  In a tight pack of cars, rarely does the guy going into the second last or last corner cross the line in first.  Sato's team was telling him to have patience, but that goes against the DNA of a race car driver.  He should have waited.

As we have seen many times in the past, wait and Sato is something that does not o together...

Hope Sato gets a win or two pretty soon. I feel he deserve something, and he is really in great groove to show his ability in this series..

If there is anyone who can teach Sato patience it is Bobby Rahal. All Sato has to do is listen and learn. I'm sure they had a long talk after the race.

I'd have liked to have been a fly on the wall Lonny, I'll bet it was an interesting talk too.
