Mike Hewland Has Died
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:30:11 PM »
Racing has lost one of its great engineers. Mike Hewland, founder of Hewland Engineering has passed at the age of 89.

The Hewland name has long been synonymous with gearbox tech. Hewland units dominated F1 in the 60's, 70's and 80's. For a long period, Ferrari was the only team on the grid that didn't use them. They were the box of choice behind the Cosworth DFV.

R.I.P, Mike.

How come we both posted the same post within 10 second of each other cos? And being the name is so much associated with you I will withdraw my post..

Where can I find a little bit more about this man cos? And if possible the detailed evolution of his famous transmission?

I heard the news while watching the ALMS race at Road America. John Hindhaugh of Radio Le Mans made the announcement. Hewland was also very influential in sports car racing.

Here's a nice piece about how he got started:

Good article Cos. Thanks for the link. It certainly sounds like an interesting book if someone will write it. Take a look at the modern factory, most impressive:

Thank you very much Cos.. As it was put in the article, he is considered as the Father of the Motor Racing Transmission, that itself say enough how much influential he was in the development of the racing cars. And I am sure he handed his legacy to continue in good hands.

R.I.P Mike...
