The switch to the new Bridgestone control tyre for the upcoming 2007 Formula One season represents one of the most significant rule changes we will see this year and as such it will have a significant impact on the way certain drivers handle their respective race cars.
For certain racers, like BMW test driver Sebastian Vettel, they are only used to Michelin rubber, but it will not be just those from teams running the French rubber last year that will be affected as Bridgestone has to face a special challenge: to provide tyre designs and compounds that meet the requirements of all the teams and all the circuits and therefore, this task has had an impact on tyre performance.
"These tyres are different from the Bridgestones used in 2006. They are a lot harder and make you slide much more," Vettel told the team’s official website. “You have to adjust yourself to the new situation. And you also have to adapt your style of driving as you can't be too aggressive any more. It's vital to focus on driving a clean line. It's true, sliding is fun -but it costs time."
The Hinwil based squad has responded to this development and in recent weeks it has completed extensive tyre tests, an effort that paid off as all drivers have proved that they are able to cope well with the new car and the new tyres as they set competitive lap times at Valencia, Jerez and Barcelona.
