The VW will cease production of the Kombi van at the end of the year. Now produced only in Brazil, it would require air bags & anti-lock brakes to remain in production.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here with fond memories of VW vans. I have a friend who still drives a mint condition green and white one regularly.

I had a friend who put one of the 4 cylinder Porsche 912 engines in his. Whee!

That would be cool.  Our mayor here has one of the pick-up versions, in bright orange.  Good shape.  We met some girls travelling through central America in one.  They drove it from California to Panama and back.  We hopped along for the Costa Rica leg and had a blast.  Got stuck in a river crossing once, but managed to eventually free ourselves.
