Why on earth a product like this should ever become commercially available is completely beyond me. Can anyone tell me a good reason? I'm intrigued, and not being into guns whatsoever, I'm clueless.

I doubt it works as well as they claim. If the shooter is moving the weapon when the sensor fires it, the amount of movement just during the time-of-flight of the round as it moves through the barrel will cause a miss at the kind of range they are talking about.

It's one of those things you have to actually try to get it.

Basically a gun is a way of exerting control over something very far away.  Who doesn't love control?

As for always hitting... who wants to spend all day failing at something?  Sure, someone who has the time to learn correct shooting skills is to be envied, just as anyone else who learns a difficult skill, but if you've got an hour on the range once a month, you'll never get to that level.  So if you want to control things far away, you need some help.  This is that help.

They make cars with traction control, power steering, antilock breaks.  That takes the fun out of it, but people don't complain.  I should think a weapon that is less likely to maim a defenseless animal (in place of a quick death) is an improvement.
