A lot of people also seem to forget that the FIA originally wanted inline 4s for this formula, but the manufacturers, including Ferrari, persuaded them to make it a V6 instead. Here again, if they had stuck together. they could still be racing their V8s. Doesn't do any good to spec an engine if no one will build it. In facy, if Ferrari had said we will be racing some other class, we will not build such a silly engine, the FIA would have backed off.
I think Lonny does have a fair point, if all of them said, we will not be doing these engine, find someone else, FIA would have to abandon these plans. I think somewhere deep down, they were willing to change things into this sort of hybrid powerplant, and the guys who is not doing the best job are now moaning about the noise.
