Liberty Media - Off on the Wrong Foot
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:31:24 PM »
Liberty Media's first few actions Lord of the (F1) Rings don't look good. First, the make a really bad offer to the teams:

http://www.gpwizard.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,20345.msg124243/boardseen.html#new

Now, they're repeating Bernie's notion that pretty buildings in the background are more important than good racing. The new top dog, Chase Carey, told CNBC's Squawk Box, "We want destination cities: Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas. That way, people would come to for a week-long event."

Destination cities? Good bye, Monza, Spa, Silverstone, Nurburgring, Hockenheim....

Ross, if you have any influence at all, please, please try to explain racing to this guy. Maybe even take him to see an actual race at an F1-worthy circuit.

Hopefully we won't refer to Bernie's F1 as the good ol days

Good racing, the old historic tracks, and fair distribution of
money to the lesser teams...how hard is that

Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

:DD :DD :DD :DD  Good one Scott.  :good:

Hey Cossie how'd it be if Indianapolis was on that destination list, would you love 'Sam Elliot' Carey then?  ;)

If it was yet another boring, claustrophobic street circuit in downtown Indy, I'd feel the same way I do about Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas (or Sochi or Baku or Paris or London or Rome or....).

Indy is a real, world class, historic racing circuit. The kind of circuit where F1 should be.

Now King Carey is talking about moving the British GP:

From AutoWeek:

Carey talked about the British GP's existing host, Silverstone, but he said there is "no question" a street race in London is an attractive notion.

"We have Silverstone in the U.K., but I recognize it is not in London," said Carey.

Sorry for the massive generalisation, I know when I refer to 'Americans' that it is not a fair representation of the whole population of the USA (although somehow Trump did get voted in) but I do find it funny when Americans are considering a 'World Series' but cant think beyond the states. If you agree with him or not, it would have been nice if Carey had thrown in a few international cities instead of just "We want destination cities: Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas".
I am very balanced when I discuss corporate USA (I have a chip on both shoulders!). I used to be European Product Manager for a US Corporation and my boss was based in Memphis. He publically criticised me in a Management meeting because I was not visiting every office at least once a week - we had offices in London, Leeds, Nottingham, Belfast, Dublin, Berlin, Budapest, Paris, Milan & Rotterdam. When I challenged him that there were not enough days in the week he said Europe is so small I should be able to do two offices a day  :fool:

Unfortunately, all too typical. The American educational system has been slipping for decades. Most Americans would be doing well to find Europe on a map, much less know anything about it. Bet he couldn't find half of those cities without Google.

As a Canadian, I do fine Europe to be mind boggling small. The thought of two cities being beside each other seems weird.  There's supposed to hundreds of km of empty space between cities!

Sure Jeri, but the spread of cities Monty mentioned ARE 100's of km away from each other.

Yes, but not open space.  It's filled with people.  There are entire countries between those cities.

It really does sound like Liberty is following the NFL's Super Bowl formula of the past couple of decades: 2 weeks of over the top hype culminating in a dead boring sporting event.

Could someone explain Glastonbury to Liberty? Now there's a destination long weekend in the middle of nowhere!
