I reckon we'll get a mid-season announcement that Fernando will retire at the end of the year. However, I am braced for a surprise (in either direction).

I remember when Jim Clark skipped Monaco for Indy. I can't remember any active F1 driver doing it in the current era..

I remember when Jim Clark skipped Monaco for Indy. I can't remember any active F1 driver doing it in the current era..

It's not like McLaren will REALLY be at Monaco anyway...

I think it's a brilliant decision.  Honda still stinks in F1 this year, so why not go where they do well - Indy.  Good for Alonso as well...he's already ticked off Monaco a couple of times, but the Indy oval is not something very many modern F1 drivers have done except as a retirement plan.

I think that Alonso's future is actually in the hands of Mercedes.  If they decide to bring him into the team in place of Bottas, he'll definitely be on the grid next year, but if not I'm not sure he will stay, unless Honda make big strides with the engine in the second half of the year, which seems improbable.
