Drivers to take to the skies in Melbourne

...as rock royalty heads to the Albert Park pit lane

13 March 2007

Spyker’s Adrian Sutil and Toyota tester Franck Montagny will swap the tarmac of Albert Park for the skies of Melbourne on Wednesday, ahead of this weekend’s 2007 FORMULA 1™ ING Australian Grand Prix. Both drivers have been invited to join the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes for their annual race weekend aerial event.

Sutil and Montagny will be passengers in the high performance PC-9 aircraft, the Roulettes formation team will use for the special aerobatic display. The event will begin at noon at the Australian track and is expected to last for 45 minutes.

Elsewhere on Wednesday in Melbourne, Toro Rosso driver Scott Speed will meet up with Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee in the Italian squad’s garage. The rock star, who is about to start an Australian tour, will then be taken out by Speed for a lap of the Albert Park track.

Race organisers have also devised a car comparison demonstration to entertain spectators in the run up to the Grand Prix. The event, scheduled to take place on four consecutive days at the Albert Park circuit, will pit BMW Sauber third driver Sebastian Vettel against Australian racers Larry and Jack Perkins.

Vettel will take charge of an F1.06 for each run, while ex-Formula One driver Larry Perkins will drive a BMW 320i road car and his son, Jack, an upcoming Supercar racer, will get behind the wheel of a Holden Commodore V8 race car.

For each event, the three drivers will start at handicapped intervals and attempt to reach the finish line at the same time. The demonstration runs will take place on Thursday afternoon at 1520 hours local time, Friday at 1210, Saturday at 1640 and at 1250 on Sunday, just before the 2007 FORMULA 1™ ING Australian Grand Prix gets underway.

I have seen this style of event take place in the past, it's always very entertaining.

Rom

Our TV coverage in the UK starts at 2.00am but the race is not until 3.30am so I hope we will have full coverage of all the fantastic events leading up to the start of the race.
