F1 to test Mudguards/Fenders at Silverstone after GP
« on: July 03, 2023, 12:42:56 PM »
We've got wheelbrows now they're looking at proper rainy weather mudguards.  :swoon:

Next will it be parasols on top of skid lids to keep drivers dry?  ;) :D :DD

At least they're testing something.

I kinda miss the old days of F1 where they tested all kinds of crazy sh!t.  It would usually be banned right away, but at least they were trying things.

I assume that Newey can use the quick connects for the flaps to gain an extra tenth a lap over the competition

My first question is are they thinking about a spec design to be used by all teams or will each team design their own withing given parameters? I don't see how they could come up with a standardized design that would have equal effects on every teams current areo package. Surely some would gain advantage and some would loose.

I always thought the spray helped get rid of the water on the track. Won't this just means it takes longer for a track to dry?

And how will this work in practice. I assume it will lengthen the pit stops by a few seconds to fit. Will race control mandate everyone to come and fit the mudguards? Under safety car conditions? Or how to avoid double stacking?

Think they're proposing to either start a race with them fitted, or use them after a red flag from bad conditions.

No suggestion yet that they will pit, like tyre stop, to fit them or even offer that possibility.

It'll be all must fit them or none. Once fitted they stay for whole race or rest of.

They can call a wet race now & all must start on wet tyres - in future they may be able to declare a 'Mudguard Handicap'.  |-(
Wonder when we'll see some races get hurdles to get over or get round? :DD

My understanding is that the spray reducers will be permanently fixed to the cars, and are intended to make sure that wet tyres actually get used for racing, rather than only to follow Safety Cars. (This would also widen the range of conditions in which we would see actual racing from F1 cars).
