What about 'Reversing' the DRS rules?

Richard Bradley, LeMans winner, has suggested that F1 try racing with DRS only allowed when you're NOT within 1 second of the car ahead.  This would make it harder for leading cars to build a lead, yet make overtaking much more earned.

I'm not sure this would work, but I wouldn't be opposed to trying it out during a sprint race.

Then how do you decide what cars don't get to use DRS? The leader won't be within a second of anyone for a while, can he just use DRS all the time?

I guess the leader would not be allowed to use DRS at all. But the cut off point would be interesting. Do you try to get close enough to overtake without DRS or stay a little further away to activate DRS to keep up.

There would be fuel considerations, wouldn't there?  If you can glide around in 2nd place with the DRS open, you'll have plenty of fuel for a 3 lap shoot out.

Only trouble Jeri is the car behind the car behind might be trying the same tactic. We can't call it a DRS Train so we'll have to have a new term. The DRS Queue maybe? 😁

Worth a try on a Sprint race to see how it works.
Anything that shakes up the status quo works for me.

I agree with Willy. The Sprint races would be a perfect place to field test ideas to improve the main races.
