Rosberg seventh fastest in second Spanish Practice
« on: May 11, 2007, 03:19:19 PM »
AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg would finish seventh fastest in the second Friday practice session for the 2007 Spanish Grand Prix. Nico would improve his time late in the session to move into the top ten. Team-mate Alex Wurz struggled during the session, only setting a time that would see him in fifteenth. He would run wide on several occassions in his attempt to get the best out of his FW29.

With Lewis Hamilton fastest in the opening Friday practice session the second would get underway with Ralf Schumacher first out onto the track. Nico and Alex were in ninth and eleventh after the first session. Ralf was followed out by many others, all on their installation lap. Ralf would set the first time only to be beaten by team-mate Trulli. Hamilton was out on the track as Heid3feld went fastest followed by Trulli, Speed, and Fisichella. Alonso would leave the pit lane as Hamilton started his first timed lap.

RosbergLewis would move ahead of Heidfeld but Alonso would make it a McLaren one-two by moving into second. Raikkonen was out on the track and would eventually move into third but Kovalainen would move into this spot with a 1m:23.158. Nico was down in eighth, 1m:23.589, while Alex was in thirteenth, 1m:24.279. Fisichella would move ahead of his team-mate and into third. Speed would set a quick time that would see him in second, 1m:22.706. Both Nico and Alex had pitted. Massa was down in eighth but would improve to be sixth, 1m:23.203. Hamilton would head back out. Nico was now in ninth and Alex fifteenth. On the speed trap figures the Williams car were near the top of the speeds. Both Renault's were back out on the circuit.

Nico would also come back out with just over an hour remaining in the session. Hamilton was setting times a margin off his quickest indicating that he was preparing for the race itself. Fisichella would move himself into third with a 1m:22.900. Alex was now out on the track looking to improve on his seventeenth fastest time.

Hamilton would pit as Kubica moved into third. Both Ferrari's had pitted. Alonso was on a really quick lap and would go fastest by 0.7 seconds, with a 1m:21.397. Webber was now in fifth, 1m:22.795. Nico was on a quick lap but would lose time in the final sector and failed to improve. Alex was in twelfth, 1m:23.484. Nico's next lap was a 1m:23.445. Raikkonen was now in seventh. Alex would leave his pit while Nico would pit after having failed to improve from tenth. Massa was down in ninth and Heidfeld tenth.

But Massa was able to improve with a 1m:22.449 to now be in third. Alex had pitted seeing Nico and Alex in eleventh and twelfth. Liuzzi would move ahead of Nico, 1m:23.428. Hamilton was back out as Webber would improve his time, 1m:22.795, to be in sixth. Eighth placed Raikkonen was on a quick lap that would see him move into fourth, 1m:22.571. With just under forty five minutes left in the session most drivers were on longer race simulation runs. Kimi would improve his time, 1m:22.251, to now be in third.

The order was Alonso from Hamilton, Raikkonen, Massa, Speed, Kubica, Webber, Fisichella, Liuzzi, and tenth placed Kovalainen. Nico and Alex were now in thirteenth and fourteenth. Alex was now back out on the track and his first alp would see him set a time of 1m:22.950 to now be in ninth. Heidfeld would move into fifth, 1m:22.543. Alex would pit after just a few laps. Alonso was back out with thirty five minutes left in the session. Kovalainen was also out on the track. Alex was in tenth and Nico sixteenth. Of the top eight only Raikkonen was in his pit. Hamilton would pit joined by Speed, the Torro Rosso driver having left the track.

Nico was out as the final thirty minutes counted down. Would he be able to improve from fifteenth. Nico was able to do exactly that setting a time that would see him finish in seventh, 1m:22.683. After his lap Nico would pit. Alex was back out on the track with the majority of drivers completing over twenty laps in the session. With twenty minutes remaining the order was Alonso from Hamilton, Raikkonen, Massa, Heidfeld, Speed, Nico, Kubica, Webber, and tenth was held by Fisichella. Again all four Honda powered cars were struggling to set competitive times. Slowest was Schumacher in his Toyota.

Nico had joined Alex on the track and would improve his time to now be in fifth, 1m:22.415. Alex would pit remaining in eleventh. Nico would also pit. In the sector three speed trap Nico and Alex were second and third fastest. Both McLaren's returned to the track as we had both Ferrari's in their pits. Nico was also come back out with eighth minutes left in the session. He was joined by Alex. The Red Bull's were ninth and tenth with Coulthard ahead of Webber. Raikkonen was also back out as the final six minutes counted down. Massa would come out as Alonso pitted but was quickly back out.

With just a handful of drivers in the pit lane the field would start to look at setting quick times. Massa was now in second, 1m:22.048, but Fisichella would move ahead of the Ferrari. Hamilton would pit, joined by Massa. Nico was now in sixth as Kovalainen moved into third, 1m:21.966 as the session came to a close. Nico was now in seventh and Alex fifteenth. The session would be a difficult one for the Austrian with him struggling to get the best out of his car, running wide on several occasions.
