Verstappen set to test for Spyker
« on: May 14, 2007, 09:53:53 AM »

Holland's super-popular former F1 racer Jos Verstappen could return to official formula one action later this year. It is reported in the Dutch press that the 35-year-old, who last drove for Minardi in 2003, is to possibly test for the Dutch team Spyker on the Friday of the Belgian grand prix in September.

The idea, which could also involve a private test, belongs to his long time sponsor Trust, and in Barcelona, team chief Michiel Mol confirmed that it is a possibility, according to the magazine Formule 1 Race Report. “When I was asked about it, I immediately thought that it is a good idea,“ Mol said.

Spa-Francorchamps is the closest thing on the current formula one calendar to a home race for Dutch fans. “At the moment this is just a discussion,“ Mol continued. “Nothing has been decided yet.“

Mol insisted, however, that the news should not be interpreted as a move to oust Christijan Albers, who so far in 2007 has failed to shine alongside his rookie teammate Adrian Sutil. But Verstappen insisted that he had “no idea“ whether his Spyker ride is designed to put countryman Albers under pressure.

Tiago Montiero has said that the reason he didn't do a deal to drive for Spyker was that "Spyker is the new Minardi." As an old Minardi fan, I didn't care for his statement, but I understand what he means. The squad has really gone down hill since the Eddie Jordan days.

Eddie and Paul were were both passionate about it and, just as important, not shy about speaking their minds. It's a shame that they couldn't make the finanial side work out.

By the way, Dare, there were several Minardi Fan Clubs here in the USA. The San Francisco club always had a good turn-out at the USGP. They are still going strong.

I have some Minardi-Cosworth things too, including a shirt signed by a certain Dutchman of note!
