Driver Nicknames
« on: July 13, 2007, 05:59:53 PM »
Sportscasters the world over have a tendency to hang nicknames on sport figures. I've noticed that the ESPN Camp Car team now have nicknames for one former and one future F1 driver.

Care to guess who "Bad Bobby D" and "Sea Bass" are?

Robert Doornbos and Sebastein Bourdais

I read somewhere that the mechanics were calling Robert Doornbos "Doorknobs".  And, of course, we all know that Prost, when he first came into F1 with the pre-Ron Dennis McLaren, was known as "Tadpole".

Why?  Because he was a little Frog...  ;)

The one for Bourdais though is quite amusing, he would keep telling the press that (excuse my written take on the French accent- I do speak it okay but it wouldn't work if I tried to be accurate):

'I am ze bes' or I am the best, but the reporters heard this as 'sea bass'

Frank Worrell, who is currently writing a bandwagon-jumping book about Lewis Hamilton, has nicknamed him "the Hertfordshire Hurricane". And there I was thinking driver nicknames were meant to be snappy...

I like John Bull's name for Lewis - Hammy.  It's proving to be pretty accurate too...  ;)
