Another one for the "and they walked away" file. Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti's fly and flip at Michigan this past week-end. Scott Dixon ended up with tire marks on his helmet. Sam Hornish, Jr. helps to right the car after the crash.
This was the car that Franchitti won this year's Indy 500 in. The IndyCar website headlined the story with "Collectible loses value." Dario had asked Michael Andretti, co-owner of Andretti - Green racing if he could display the car in his native Scotland. When Franchitti returned to the pits after the crash, Michael told him, "You can have it now."
"I'm devastated to see my '500' car torn up like that," Franchitti said. "I have to say though that it did it's job; it really saved me. I guess I owe that car a lot. Hopefully, now Michael will drop the price on it for me. I hope we can eventually get it repaired and to Scotland sometime."
This was the last IndyCar race at the Michigan track. The series had already planned not to return do to the unsafe speeds the Indy cars reach there.
