this is what a f1 car should sound like

To be honest.....I prefer the higher pitch and smoother sound of the modern day F1 engine....I don't know what it is that I love so much about it...but I love it...I have even taken a sound file and made it my mobile ringtone......

Oh my ears, music, you've gotta listen to this with 'phones on, mind blowing.

How different to present day F1, and yet that was only 91. Did you notice him feathering and blipping the throttle. Did you notice how nervous the car looks, unlike todays cars which appear to be on rails.

But the greatest sounding F1 I have heard to date was the Matra V12. What an ear pearcing wail. And especially through the streets of Monaco, which I visited 3 times in the late 60s, early70s.

One of the things I liked best about the pre-turbo era cars is that the engines each seemed to have their own, distinctive sound. One could recognize a Cosworth DFV from a Matra V12 from a Ferrari, BRM, ect. by hearing them approach before ever seeing them.

A few years ago, they had a gathering of historic F1 cars at the USGP. During F1 practice, I was standing on a viewing mound between the track and the historic car paddock. The historic cars fired up while the current cars were on track. Everyone on the hill immediately turned their backs on the track to listen to the 60's - 70's cars.

That's just the kind of thing I was talking about. The Matra engine had its own, distinct sound. Like Mario says in the commentary, it just sounded like power!
