F1 finale attracts 10 million viewers

Lewis Hamilton's Formula One world title heartache was watched by 10.6 million television viewers.

Live coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix on ITV1 attracted half of the entire TV audience at its peak.

The race itself averaged 9m viewers (47% share), with the whole programme from 4pm to 7pm averaging 7.3m (41% share).

The figures make it the most watched race since 2000, and across the season as a whole figures reached their best average (3.4m) since 2001 - a 41% increase on the 2006 season.

The F1 viewing figures did not quite eclipse those from the previous night's Rugby World Cup final, which attracted a peak viewing figure of 16m (62% share) and was the most watched programme to date this year.
