Scratch Villeneuve and Lauda. Add Sir Sterling Moss and Mario Andretti. Honorable Mention to Mika and Kimi. I'm sure that Lewis will make the list, but needs more thatn one season to be considered.

You can't take Villeneuve out and leave Brabham in.  What about Ascari?  Much as I am a Mario fan I don't think he would make my ten.  I am not sure Graham Hill would either.

I have only scanned the text but when did JYS do the two extra races and when did Gilles do a whole season at McLaren.  I know that he would have done one in 1983 but circumstances intervened.

You just know that there is never going to be agreement on this.

Hey, it's MS-NBC. They prob. had to look up F1 in Wikipedia to see what it is.

You just know that there is never going to be agreement on this.

That's part of the fun, isn't it? ;)

In that bit about JS they say 101 races competed in
at the start and the right number 99 at the end.Wonder
how that got by

I went back and read it and noticed that.

They also have Graham Hill starting 179 races instead of 176.

Perhaps they treated the Indy 500 races as GP starts, forgetting that Indianapolis was dropped from the F1 calender (for the first time) in 1960? It would be the right number of races for both  Graham and Jackie. Can't explain Villenueve, though...

OK, I'm Belgian, but a twice vice-world champion shouldn't be forgotten:Jacky Ickx! You don't get to drive for Ferrari (and the Commendatore is still alive!), win Le Mans 6 times and about 50 Endurance-races + Paris-Dakar + Can Am-series if you don't know how to drive a car!

Hello Enrico nice to have you on board, hope you enjoy the site as much as we do.

For me the heading says it all "Greatest F1 Drivers" not Greatest F1 Champions, so our opinions will probably be quite subjective.

I would put Ickx, Peterson, Scheckter, Surtees or Ascari in place of Graham Hill or Villeneuve but that is from the heart not my head. Brabham must stay in the list though he is a true legend.

Guess to do it proper you'd have to list the
greatest by each decade.A few overlap from
one decade to the next

I think Brabham is massively over-rated as a driver.  He won his first championship in a Cooper where he had the advantage of a mid-engined car in a field of dinosaurs.  The following year he won again while other people were trying to figure out how to make a mid-engined car work and others like Ferrari had their heads in the sand.  Bear i mind Cooper had been running mid-engined F3 cars for a few seasons so understood the subtleties better than anyone.

His third championship was the first year of the three litre formula.  His team had Repco engines while most of the rest were struggling to find any 3 litre engine.  The following year with more or less the same advantage he was beaten to the title by his own team mate.

Legend - yes
Top ten driver - no way.
