Today, 14 february 2008, the Bob Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving celebrates its 40th anniversary.
The school started at a drag strip in Orange County, California, later moved to Ontario Motor Speedway and then Sears Point Raceway, and since 1990 has been based at a purpose-built facility adjacent to Firebird International Raceway just south of Phoenix. The school's students range from teenagers to treasury agents, from motorsports enthusiasts to motorsports superstars. The school trains chauffeurs in executive-protection techniques and commuters in surviving daily traffic. There is customized instruction for corporate customers, and a 200-vehicle fleet includes go-karts to Corvettes. More than 120,000 students have attended over the past 40 years.
Here are a few Fun Facts about the school:
Nearly 10,000 people each year go through the Bondurant driving school. Those people burn their way through 100 clutches, 800 cases of oil, more than 900 brake pads and more than 4000 tires.
Celebrities who are Bondurant graduates include Candice Bergen (
), Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Katie Holmes, Nicolas Cage, Paris Hilton, Tim Allen, Tom Cruise, William Shatner, Ice Cube, John Oates, Sammy Hagar, Gabrielle Reece, Mia Hamm, Terrell Owens, Geraldo Rivera, Jimmy Kimmel, Paul Harvey, Peter Jennings and John Chancellor. Even before starting his school, Bondurant coached James Garner for his role in Grand Prix.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dick Trickle, Jimmie Johnson, assorted Waltrips and Wallaces and a couple of Gordons (Jeff and Robby), Tony Stewart, Kenny Bernstein, Ron Fellows, Scott Pruett, Ivan Stewart, Sammy Swindell, Gary Gabelich, Al Under Jr., Chip Ganassi, Lyn St. James, Rick Mears and Scott Sharp are just a few of the Bondurant alumni who have made a living in motorsports.
Not only does the school make use of Cadillac CTSs, Pontiac Solstices, Chevrolet Corvettes, formula cars, go-karts and a variety of (oft-dented) vehicles for its executive-protection program, but its fleet of more than 200 vehicles also includes several GM SUVs used for teaching "government employees" to handle assorted assignments.
