HD DVD is dead - Long Live Blu Ray
« on: February 13, 2008, 11:36:14 AM »

HD DVD has practically lost the battle to be the main high definition format, Sony Blu-ray has clearly won and it’s like HD DVD is a boxer floored to the mat and the counting is at 9…ready for YOUR OUT!

Hats of to the HD DVD Promotional Group, they are doing their best to put a spin on every set back, but they will need to face it sooner or lately that they are fighting a losing battle, day after day another brand moves to the Sony Blu-ray corner…its getting crowded over there.

Yesterday saw two more knocks to HD HVD, Netflix picks Blu-ray (just like Blockbuster did a long time ago) and Best Buy put Blu-ray to the front.

It’s just a sad fight now and an official statement from Toshiba admitting defeat cannot be far away.

Woolworths went with a Blu-ray exclusive (the UK’s biggest retailer of next-gen DVD discs), the last 3 months in Japan Blu-Ray crushed HD DVD and sold 90% of standalone player sales (the Sony PS3 not included), rumoured the Xbox 360 will support Blu-ray if the consumer wants it, Paramount may withdraw support for HD DVD in favour of Blu-ray this year as Warner Bros abandoned HD DVD for Blu-ray.

The end is neigh....

Ok, I'm still waiting to see players in my price range, so I haven't jumped on the HD bandwagon yet.  But my question is - are there players already out there that will play both my standard DVD's AND Blue-Ray, or do I have to have yet another godforsaken box beside my TV (I almost bought a combi VCR DVD player a while back...glad I didn't)?

Yeah i'm sure they'll play Betamax. Sony wouldn't have left out that backwards compatibility.

How about 8-tracks?
